I installed the Ram mount this afternoon... I'm very pleased with the results. Ram mounts are known for their durable/functional/quality construction. I looked into the factory Garmin mount, but there is a night/day difference between the two. The gps unit does not bounce/bobble around whatsoever with this setup. The adjustability is also very nice with this mount.
Once the power cord arrives, I'll be running the wires through the panel, via a rubber grommet, to a key-on 12v source.
I highly recommend this gps/mount combination.

I use the RAM mounts on my BMW motocycle to mount my CSx, water bottle holder and other misc stuff but haven't converted them to the FJ yet. Nice install and in the same place I was thinking of putting my iPhone mount (since the wife likes to work the GPS on trips).

Nice photos. Nice install. It looks really good with the factory interior color scheme.
what was used to cut into the panel?
Thanks for the compliments. I started out with a 1/8" drill bit. Then I used stepped drill bits called a 'unibit' (first drills to 1/2", second drills from 1/2" to 1").
The 10-24 stainless steel hardware was purchased at Ace Hardware. I would have used metric, but they don't carry metric ny-lock nuts in the size I needed so I went with the 10-24 size. The 10-24 fit the existing holes in the ram mount base better than the 6mm metric stuff.

I was actually thinking about purchasing another base to mount on the passenger side so that if my wife or anyone else felt like navigating, they could from the passenger side. Then again, the 60csx is a handheld unit, so I could just pop it out of the mount and hand it over.

Probably just a hole saw. Awesome idea to mount it like that.
The base is designed to be mounted on the outer surface, but in my opinion, it's pretty ugly with its 7 unevenly placed holes. Mounting it from the back side of the panel worked out nicely. It's a very rigid mount, made out of powder coated cast aluminum, but it's just ugly.

I use the same basic mount, but with the handlebar attachment on the end. That is attached to the A-Pillar handle and extends forward towards my eyes. It doesn't obscure my view because the A-Pillar is behind it, gets the screen close enough for me to read, and keeps my head up out of the cab so I can still keep an eye on the road out of the corner of my eye. I can snap a shot of the setup if anyone is particularly interested.
