Speaker Question

Need Some advise, I just got a new FJ and was wanting to upgrade the sound some. No large scale project. Question, Is it really worth replacing the factory speakers. I know with most cars it is but not sure how good the factory speakers are compared to aftermarket.
Thanks for the help

Re: Speaker Question

loads better but it depends on how much you want to spend and if you're going to do it yourself or let a shop do it for you.

Audio FAQ, Part 2 - LONG - Compiled posts

You will see that budget has alot to do with sound quality. For some, the fjammer system is good, I am no audiophile, but I was looking for a system upgrade. I have a JL 5channel amp, Alpine head unit (9857) with the factory aux input and steering wheel controls, Sirius module (in the head unit) and have Polk 6x9's in the doors, Polk DB400's in the rear pillars and Eclipse 3.5" in the dash and a Polk 8" DVC subwoofer installed in the factory sub box. I also have a Viper 5900 alarm/ remote start...total package installed was around $2700 bucks. I think it sounds very good, as do most who ride in my FJ. Not window shattering sound, but good, clean sound that is plenty loud for my ears. The toyota speakers are a joke, the 6x9's magnet is the size of a quarter, and weigh a few ounces, where as my Polk 6x9's weigh a few pounds each. I think the Fjammer system is overpriced, and would tell people to go with the base setup and save some $$$ for a decent setup. You will find quickly, that the factory head unit is weak on power when it comes to pushing upgraded speakers, an amp is a must for good clean sound.
Hope this helps,
Rob

Re: Speaker Question

Thanks for the advice on the speakers. Not really worried about budget but at the same time not intrested in building a $2000 system either. Would just like to find out what is the best things to replace. Dont want to mess this thing up. I love it but not to good at deciding what I need.

Re: Speaker Question

I put 3.5 speakers on the dash and rear pillar....6.5 on the door... You can get pretty good 3.5 speakers for $60 a pair...I got mine 6.5 speakers from Cruthfield, They will send you the 6x9 adapter and the conector for free...

Re: Speaker Question

Don't by name brands. There are tons of underground speaker companies that make phenomenal products. I spent loads more than I needed to on Rockford Fosgate equipment...Wish I went the underground route.

Sorry I don't rememberany names of these companies. Also check ebay for GREAT prices. I saved about $3k on my sound system because I bought EVERYTHING through ebay. Everything I received was beautiful and brand new and works great!

I didn't help much, but keep it in mind.

Also try doing the whole install yourself, you will save a LOT of money. Shop quoted me $1000 for my install (not in FJ but in my Magnum RT). I ended up doing it myself. 3 day install...extremely happy camper. Afterwards, if there are noise issues or problems, take it to an installer and have them TROUBLESHOOT it. That will cost much less and it will sound really good.

Post pics when you are done!

Matt

Re: Speaker Question

if you just want better sound, i would go with a new head unit, a set of 6.5" components up front, and a set of 6.5" coaxials in speaker pods in the rear. get a nice 4 channel amp as well.

Re: Speaker Question

I have decided to change out the 2 rear speakers and the 2 front dash first. Can anyone tell me which one to but that will fit in without much modifications.
Thanks

Re: Speaker Question

I put the 3.5" MB Quart speakers without any problems. If I had to do it over again I would have gone with seperates in the front but with an amp I am quite pleased with the upgraded sound quality. I was able to utilize exitting holes with no drilling in the dash openings and only had to drill one hole in each rear location. You will need spacers to pull the rear speakers out a bit so the magnets dont touch the body. You will also need to trip the inside of the speaker covers so that aftermarket speakers will fit. This can easily be done with a pocket knife.

Re: Speaker Question

I'm in the same boat now as well. Yes, the FJammer is okay (not real loud), but the lack of bass is really getting to me. I don't have the factory sub.

What would happen if I added a small sub with an amp to the FJammer system? Would that be possible? Would it be worth my time?

Please take into consideration, I know nothing about the installation of any car speakers/equipment.
