Thinking about buying an FJ - there are some serious deals out there. I'm concerned about minimal radio locations. I like the possibility of an overhead mount. I could also go to a single DIN radio and use the bottom for a remote radio head... Just thinking and looking at members' interior radio mounts and mods. I had my TS440 in my old Isuzu Rodeo and almost finished DXCC - Mobile! in '92...Ah, those were the days! Come on sunspot cycle 24!!

I just got finished installing a Yaesu FT-7800 overhead in my FJ. There is very limited space, so you have to be aware of all little spots to hide the radio.
I have a Radio Shack CB Mounted to the headliner, then the FT-7800 face plate mounted to the underside of the CB via L-brackets. All cords are neatly ran with the factory wiring harness to the back where the jack is. I removed the entire panel and placed the radio directly above the wheel well next the gas cap. The panel was then put back on - no wires or the unit can be seen.
I think this is a good spot to mount a small radio. If you want HF, I would highly suggest something like the FT-897 or IC-706 with the face mounted in a convenient location.
The FJ is very tight on space. It takes some extra work to mount radios, but well worth the effort.

Just hopped on the HAM bus... friggin love it so far.
The night my callsign showed up in the FCC database, I hit up a repeater in downtown Tucson, fired up an IRLP node, and was talking to another forum member in Phoenix.

I'm semi active on hf using older vintage gear. Hf & vhf gear going in the FJ soon...using a ht now for vhf operation.
I was first licensed as a novice in CA as WB6WVZ in 1977. My current call is actually a vanity call sign as I got nostalgic for my original call from 30+ yrs ago.
You all seem like a bunch of great guys with alot of valuable info. Hope to catch you on the air (and trail) soon!
Oh and congrats to all the new hams!!
