I'm semi active on hf using older vintage gear. Hf & vhf gear going in the FJ soon...using a ht now for vhf operation.
I was first licensed as a novice in CA as WB6WVZ in 1977. My current call is actually a vanity call sign as I got nostalgic for my original call from 30+ yrs ago.
You all seem like a bunch of great guys with alot of valuable info. Hope to catch you on the air (and trail) soon!
Oh and congrats to all the new hams!!

I'd like to compose a list of ALL the HAMS on the board
KE7JDE / IZ2GMV (Just moved to California from Italy).
By the way, I had an address in WA that is why "KE7". Now that I am in California, should I request an updated callsign? I still have to register my car here, I've heard I can request a ham radio personalized plate?
Not sure if I ever checked into this thread. WB6JAY here.....I use a FT857 in the FJ. I like using HF, VHF, and a little UHF. Oh Yea...If you check me out on QRZ, you will see my other FJ.

Hi manoweb -
You can request a new callsign if you want to. In the old days when you moved from one callsign district (Wa - 7) to a different district (Ca - 6) you would receive a new callsign with the appropriate designation. The rules changed some years back and now you can keep your call wherever you move in the US. If you want other hams to know your geographic location by your call then update to a 6 callsign. If you like your current 7 call then you can keep it.
You can get a personalized or vanity plate from the DMV upon proof of license. In Oregon I have seen plates with callsigns outside the 7 district. I would assume Ca. would allow the same.
