Took my "gat box" out yesterday and it does make for easy access to the back of the gauges. I was thinking of putting a 12v outlet in there, but no go. The only way it would fit is from the bottom facing up. Then you are just asking for something to fall in there and short it out!
Granger - Make sure to post pics and details about the wire for the speed sensor, I am sure others (including me) could use this info when installing our navigation systems....

Re: Anyone removed the driver's side storage box?
im 99% sure you can get the VSS wire in the back of the radio coming from the steering wheel control harness.Toyota ALWAYS puts these there iun all their cars.My scion xb(delivery car for work) had one there and it doesnt even come with a option for nav.also did you guiys know that the camry navigation will plug and play into an fj?
VSS
Purple/Red at fuse box rear 4 pin plug pin #1
Also found at the ECM (Engine Control Module) behind the glovebox, second plug from the bottom, pin 8.

gsgmac, I was able to install a 12v outlet in the driver's gat box by placing the outlet horizontally in the lower right corner (the one away from the windshield on the right side). It fit perfectly between the two ribs and I only had to trim a small amount of plastic in the dash behind the outlet for it to fit underneath the dash and through the cut hole.
The sneaky part, was to re-install the box after you cut the hole, and then push the outlet through from the inside once the box is bolted in. Only minimal trimming was needed to remove about 1 inch worth of plastic in the dash before re-installing the box. Everything is still solid, and no factory mounting points were lost by cutting the dash plastic.
I used the ground wire behind the switchplate underneath the radio, and ran the hot wire directly to the fuse box. (Thanks to instructions on installing an outlet in the console from other members!)
This gives me ability to charge things without having the ignition on and to hide the goodies from prying eyes at the same time.
On a side note, I found that stuff in this box gets really hot. Even tried some stick on mylar bubble insulation in the lid but I think it's the lack of air circulation.
So I wouldn't recommend keeping an iPod, GPS or cell phone up there.
Might want to lay a towel or something down when you pull that box - I managed to give myself a little scratch on the dash with the clips on the bottom of the box as I pulled it out. Better safe than sorry!
