The Lowrance 540c leaves what they call a bread crum trail of where you've been. You can place Icons and assign waypoints with greater detail on your trails. As for topo, here of the left coast lake pacific shows up, not sure about rivers and lakes...

Re: GPS with offroad, and terain?

Delorme's Earthmate GPS PN-20 looks interesting. IPX-7 standard waterproof handheld with a color sreen. Doesn't appear to have a SiRF chip set but probably more flexible than most. In addition to the standard built-in stuff it looks like you can download satellite, aerial and detailed topo maps for the area you plan to travel (the aerial/satellite/7.5-minute quad maps appear to be downloadable at a cost, $100 per 400 sq. km but standard topos are in the included software). You can also upload your waypoints from a trail run to your PC and save it there. $369 at Amazon. Also at REI.

Re: GPS with offroad, and terain?

If you have room to take a laptop, this works super great: buy Maptech Terrain Navigator for the laptop, you can get all the 7.5 minute USGS topos in any state plus downloadable aerial/satellite photos for a couple of hundred buck a state. Plug any cheap GPS into the laptop, and you have a laptop-size topo map with your truck always in the center of the map. I love this setup but you need someone to hold the laptop or another way to mount/secure it when the going gets rough.

Garmin has topo maps for their 60csx series GPS. It's and option for your area. You just add the sim card your done. I think you;ll be satsfied with it, if you have their hand held.
