The adjustment sets the magnetic declination for your area. Magnetic North and true North are two different things. I am not sure I would call it errors in magnetic North. Magnetic North also moves over time. 100 years ago magnetic North was different than it is today and what it will be in the future. The fact that you can set the declination setting in the FJ means the compass uses magnetic North. Still not a very good compass. Here is a tip if any of you use a hand held compass. It will not be accurate until you get out of the vehicle and step away about 20 feet. The metal from the vehicle effects the accuracy of the compass. Hope I helped.

Sorry, didn't mean to upset anybody. I guess the point I am trying to make is the compass in most vehicles cannot measure much better than N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW because of the metal mass in which they are located in.

Nah, no one upset here. Just making light of myself, lol. And the info you give is great for alot of people who dont completely understand magnetic vs true north.

Well, after reading everyone's argument, none of my questions were answered about the compass thing. And so many people posting seem to have trouble understanding what the actual problem is. It has nothing to do with magnetic fields or zones or anything like that. The arrow just doesn't point right sometimes. Mine lines up perfectly at every direction except for West. When the compass tries to point West, the arrow points just slightly left of the W, not right on the letter like all the other directions do. I've tried recalibrating it, I made sure my zone was right (and btw Arizona is a 5, not a 6 according to the map) Just wish I could fix it, it drives me nuts.
