rear subwoofer

I was looking at the rear connection for the subwoofer and found all the wires i need to hook up an amp and sub. However, i dont feel like taking the whole truck apart in order to run a power wire from the front to the back. Does anyone here know how strong the power wires located in the rear connector are and does anyone one recommend me using those. The amp will be no stronger then 150 watts. Thanks for any information!

Re: rear subwoofer

I would not use the stock power wire prob is only 16ga at the most and you risk a fire if your amp pulls too much current on this wire.

I used a 16 ga wire to run a sony 30x2 in my younger days and I can definately say the smell of melting plastic is disturbing at the very least.

Run the new power wire it will not be hard at all. I ran my Sirius antenna from th back of the FJ to the front and it took no time at all.

Re: rear subwoofer

If you're doing an aftermarket amp, are you using the factory head unit? If you're using an aftermarket head unit I strongly suggest you go RCA to the amp vs. line level. Then while you run the RCA's you can simply run the power from the battery.

In my engine compartment, near the brake booster there was a perfect hole for running the power wire for my new amp/sub. Nice and clean.

Now I just have to tear it all apart again to install my backup camera. Does it ever end?!?!?

Re: rear subwoofer

Don't waste your time with the OEM sub harness. The FJ comes apart really easy. You can run all new wiring for your sub system faster than you can track down the inputs and remote turn on wire. The OEM power wire is not large enough to power even a small aftermarket amplifier properly.
As Adam said, there is a grommet to the right of the brake unit that you can bring a real power source in through. RCA's from the headunit will also work much better than a high level input. Not to mention that many after.market headunits have subwoofer volume controls built in that you can take advantage of if you run RCA's back.
