What do you mean shops won't use compustar units due to liability and laws? I know nothing of the compustar systems...
as of the beginning of this year, compustar is the only manufactuer that is out of the box compatible with manuals. it isnt a good setup, but it did consider manuals. and all the other alarms can be used on manuals when setup properly, but it isnt a safe setup by any means. 99% of the shops wont do it.

that is a little misleading, there are quite a few of manual trans ready starters, the largest manufacture is Autostart in Canada.
Every one of their starters and combo's are manual ready as of the fall of this year.
Compustar is a great product as well, so is viper (look for manual units in about a year).

Could you explain your coment "..but it inst a safe setup by any means."
Seems to me CA is behind the times on remote starters, I have not heard of anyone shops up here who wouldn't install one come to think of it most of them recomend it.

Most of them recommend installing them on manuals? I highly doubt that. Remote start on a manual doesn't seem too smart if you think about it.

I have it in my MT FJ, works like a dream. Pretty simple to use.
I would venture to say probably 90% of the vehicles up here have a remote starter of some kind in them. People who want a remote starter in a manual car, the Compustar is the system the shops recomend.

After doing some searching, its a fact that remote start systems in manuals are viewed as dangerous in all states (US) mainly due to the fact that the remote starter can't tell if a manual transmission is in gear or not, and from what I'm reading in quite a few states it is actually illegal. If your manual transmission car is in gear and the starter motor starts turning, the vehicle will begin moving, I don't know if Compustar has found a fix for this (I don't quite know how they could have without other modifications to the vehicle) but yeah.
The Compustar system needs to 'see' the car running to set itself in 'ready mode'.
When you park the vehicle, engage the park brake, foot of the clutch, foot of the brake with the engine running......only at this point will the system 'see' that the FJ is parked and running.
Remove the key from the ignition, the vehicle will stay running.
Open your door and exit, close the door. Vehicle will shut off and the doors will lock.
At this point the vehicle is in ready mode and ready to remote start.
If you happen to forget somthing in the vehcile and you have to go back in after you are in ready mode.......as soon as you re-lock the door the vehicle is instantly out of ready mode.
If at any piont when exiting the vehicle you bump the brake, clutch etc you are instantly out of ready mode.
You wait to long to exit the vehicle once the key is removed.....out of ready mode.
It is pretty easy to use, either you are in ready mode or not. No gray area.
