Wow. That looks pretty durable. I guess it works with regular auto plugs as well as the heavy duty, locking ones they sell. I must investigate further - this may be the way to go for me.

I added another 12v behind the dash for my GPS Garim C550. The 12v was added a few weeks ago while I was waiting for the GPS, so I don't have the ground point in a pic, but if you were succesfull with installing the first 12v then this is alot easier.

I pulled open the fuse panel and installed a 12v socket right into the fuse panel. On the end of the pos wire I crimped on a connector and then trimmed the plastic down and pinch the metal end until it was small enough to fit into the top of a fuse slot. The fuse slot I used powers on and off with the FJ, there were one or two others empties I tried that were constant power.

I ran the neg wire to one of the factory ground points, you need to wiggle and pull towards you the foot rest, it just pops off, then where the foot rest was, to the bottom left of it is a plastic screw you just turn it with your hand. Then pull off the plastic panel that goes under the doors, now you can just pull off the panel in the pic, the ground point is obvious and right behind it.

Here's everything neatly tucked behind the dash

To run the GPS wire end, I pulled off the left vent, the whole silver piece just pulls towards you. Then I took the cover off the tweeter and took the 2 bolts out and unplugged/removed the tweeter, then I pulled the cover for the vin# on the dash. You can see the black wire I ran behind the dash.

The hardest part was trying to get the plug pushed under and out through the tiny gap between the dash, windshield and vin# plate, the end of the connector was a rectangle, I was anticipating a round end, thus smaller. I used my panel remover to help push it up while I wiggled the end of the wire around. Then I ran the wire through the vin plate cover and snapped it back on

I put the speaker back in and put all the pieces back together. This is what it looks like when the GPS is not attached. I will by another power cord if I need to use the GPS in another vehicle.

Final Product, Nice clean look
CAn you post a pic of the crimp you used. I will try this with my TomTom but don't know what to use? I may try the Tapa circuit but dant know what fuse to stick in there.

I used a red wire crimp for 22-18 gauge wire

You can see the metal inside

I trimmed the casing using my wire cutters and pliers

I exposed about 3/16" of metal

You'll need to pinch the end of the metal, it is round which won't fit into the fuse slot, it will need to be made flat-ish, I kept pinching it until it fit into the fuse slot

Make sure you use a crimper to connect the wire to the crimp, works much better than pliers

I got the crimper part of a kit with my panel remover

I use these

THat way I do not have unfused wires running around. I hate the smell of burning insulation.

I do not double up the fuses like you can do, I just use them to tap off with a fused wire.
What size fuse do you use with these? I found them on JC WHitneys and will pick up 2. Just need to know fuse size.

If you are using a fuse slot allready in use, you can use that mini-fuse. If you are using an empty slot, then a 10amp fuse I would think is safe assuming you are using 18 gauge wire. I found this table of wire vs amps American Wire Gauge table and AWG Electrical Current Load Limits , so you could use a 15 amp fuse for 18 gauge, but do you need that much power. 10amp give you 120w peak continuous, 15 amp gives 180w.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

I will be using the Rad shack 12v adapter for my TomTom. Would you say a 10amp fuse for that use would be good. I will be installing it is the same empty spot you used.

10amps is more than enough to run your TomTom, plus the built in fuse on the outlet is 10amps.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

Here's another option for the 12V mouting position. Simple to do and running along the side of the rear console there is enough depth to put in 6 if you really needed them THanks for the excellent post! It inspired me to do this simple mod!!
