I'm new to making electical mods....but want to add a 12v to the front and back as descibed here. But I have a couple questions.
1) The detail given in this thread is great...and the pictures are fantastic. However...the part that I am new to is "tapping into the power line". How do you tap into an existing line? Cut the current line, connect your new line, solder and tape it? Or is there some kind of connector that you use to split the current line into 2 seperate lines?
A wire tap connects two wires without cutting either wire, the tap connects over the live wire, and you slide the end of the wire you want to give power, upon closing the tape, a metal prong will cut the insulation around each wire just enough to make contact with the wire, but not enough to cut it. So in the pic you can see a very thin red wire the runs through the blue tap (factory wire) and a thicker red wire the comes out of the tap (New wire).
2) I was going to connect my rear outlet to the subwoofer feed (white with blue stripe). I'm just going to cut that line before the harness for the sub, and wire the hot from the outlet right to that. Is that correct?
You could cut the wire, I prefer not to cut any factory wires. I attached a Blue crimp connector to the pos wire of the new outlet and slid the connector over the pin in the sub harnes. The blue connector fit perfectly, slightly snug, no worry about it falling off. This is the easiest and completely reversible method. The pic below is of a crimp connector, you need a Blue one.
Awesome ruebarb...thank you! Are the wire taps a commonly stocked item in hardware/auto supply stores? Do the wire taps come is different sizes for different gauges? Thanks!
I did it pretty much like SwissArmySUV, but I used an "Add-a-Circuit" for power from the fuse box. Worked like a charm. Looks factory and now I can charge the ipod and use the GPS! Thanks for the inspiration and information!

I too am now using Add-a-circuit mini, pinching the end of a connector to fit just right into a fuse slot is a b!tch.
Mini add-a-line or add-a-circuit. My package was $17.00 and came with a variety of fuses. It was so simple...plug and play! Got mine at NAPA auto parts.
