Just a heads up for the people with 4 wheel drive.

Once the console is out screw your 4 wheel drive shifter knob back on. If you dont the threads will probably scratch the switch panel when you are trying to add the wire tap.

I spent a little more time and moved all my switches to the upper row and learned the hard way.
Actually Rue was very specific about this in the original thread Check Step 5

Thanks guys for all the details, I installed mine today just like swissarmy did. Im thinking of doing another one like ruebarb did, and maybe order the factory toyota outlet with the nifty flip down cover. Just found out you could order that today, after I already bought the one from radioshack.
I do mention the Factory Part "For EOM socket install & Parts", I'll make it more obvious.

Parts
  • For EOM socket install & Parts
  • Radio Shack Part #270-1556

The radio shack kit comes with everything you need, the wire is 3ft long, just long enough with a little slack.
  • Small Flat Head screw driver or Nylon panel remover
  • 10mm socket & rachet with very long extension
  • Small pliers
  • 1 3/32 bore bit, I used 1 1/8

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

I just added a couple of OEM 12 volt outlets to my FJ. I wired these into the wire harness where it feeds the existing 12 volt jack because I don't anticipate drawing much current.

I found the OEM jacks very easy to work with. I drilled 1" holes (which were a perfect fit) using a regular old spade drill bit. I then needed to file a small key channel so that the jack wouldn't rotate after the install. Standard female 1/4" spade connectors fit the OEM plug lugs just fine.

Here's one in the typical spot:

And here's one in the driver's box, closed:

and open:

I think this is the ideal location for a plug in the driver's box, but the install is a little tricky. I did have to remove a little bit of plastic from the underside of the dash to create clearance for the OEM plug. If I want to remove the driver's box from the dash in the future, I will need to remove the OEM plug before I can pull the box out (this could very well involve destroying the plug). I was willing to live with this.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

Great pictures to follow from.

Helped me out...took me about an hour and half to install both.

I installed two 12V Power Outlets: one in the driver side glove box and the other in the coin tray area.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

Canteen - did you tap both your 12V power outlets to the original OEM power outlet? I'm just curious - i added one (radio shack kit) to my console and i'm thinking of adding another in the drivers glovebox. As long as we don't plug anything in that creates a lot of draw - we should be safe (i hope).

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

I am tending to prefer the outlets to the right of the shifter. Does anyone have pictures/install advice for this location?

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

CactusJK,
did mine, looks exactly like post #214.
I wish I had place it more forward, as I move the passenger site forward often and leave the plug in. It does touch...
