Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

thanks so much for this install guide. I did mine today. took about 45 minutes. would have been faster if i didn't have to keep coming inside to make sure i was doing the right thing (a little ocd).
I also installed the one in the rear from the subwoofer wire. Since no sub, this is great. It is MUCH easier and provides constant 12volt power (with no key). I wanted to have both though. So now, 3 12volt outlets, one with direct battery power. Thanks guys.

CactusJK,
did mine, looks exactly like post #214.
I wish I had place it more forward, as I move the passenger site forward often and leave the plug in. It does touch...

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

Thanks to Ruebard for starting this thread.

Thanks to Scott9000 for the idea in the back.

Put one in the back last night and that was a snap. It will help run our fridge. I've included a picture of the back of the panel for those who still haven't done it. I never could find a pic.

this is where I put mine.

I just want to add that if you have a FJ that is not a 4x4 you need to move the plugs closer to the dash. I used the measurements form this thread and I hit the bottom of my change holder or cup that replaces the 4x4 knob. I had to mod the holder for it to sit in the correct spot with the new lighter installed.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

Hello,

I have a couple of questions regarding this mod and would really appreciate if you can help me:

1- For people who connected the rear outlet to the sub (White/Blue) wire, is it working ok so far or is there any heating problems? I'm planning to use it for my Waeco Fridge or mattress pump so would this be OK?

2- I have a water kettle, when i read the specs of this kettle it's mentioned that the consumption is 16A, will it be OK if i connect it to one of these outlets or will i blow a fuse? If not what is the other options i can do to have it work while camping in the dersert.

3- I want to add another outlet on the left driver side for my GPS unit, don't want to hardwire it cuz the cig power cord has the built in speaker, would it be ok if I use ruebarb method to attach the red wire crimp to the +ve wire of the radioshack accessory and plug it to the fuse box cuz i can't find here at all the Add-a-circuit accessory. If someone has picture on how to connect this red wire crimp to the fuse box that would be much appreciated.

I'm not good with electrical so i'm not planning to add a circuit or another fuse block for the time being, so please give me the easiest way to do add these outlets without adding extra fuse block.

Thanks for this great forum for all the info.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

You guys must have good radio shacks; ours stinks! They didn't have yellow LEDs for the 'Sunshine' lower lighting fix, and they only had one of the 12V plugs at $7.99 (i saw the '06 pic was $6.99).

1 - I haven't had any problems like that. I ran my fridge of about 12 hours during the recent Jamboree.

2-3 Don't know.

1 - Already been covered

2 - No, the outlets are rated for 10A. Get an adapter that clips directly to your battery, but understand that you're drawing quite a bit of amperage and you're going to run your battery down quicker than you think (if it draws 16A continuous).

3 - Well, Yes. However, I highly suggest you find local or order the add-a-fuse. They're everywhere here: Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Advance. The fuse ensures that in case you have a short circuit, the wires don't go up in flames (possibly along with your FJ).

3 - The crimp method was my first idea and a PITA, I have changed it to a add-a-circuit. You can get it Amazon.com: Wirthco 30103 Tapa-Circuit- Mini: Automotive and I have bought these from Advanced Auto parts.
