Ruebarb, come on, do you really have to have a need to add a power point...just do it so that if you do need it- it is there. We don't need to drive through the wilderness, but that is completely beside the point.
Yeah, I know. It's a 15min job too. I had one in my previous car, think I used it once.

Is their a ground point back there or did you use the ground on the harness or tap a screw into the abundant metal around the wheel well?
There is a bolt that the harness is grounded to that I used. You need a pretty big "eye" type spade for the screw but it worked very well.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

thanks... now we're talking...

only thing I have to add is for anyone doing GPS or XM install (Roady/ Roady XT etc) to put a few female sockets behind the dash (hidden) so you can plug those accessories in and not eat up and of your cig. sockets in the passenger compartment. Makes for a clean install of gear when you can see the powerpoints.

Roady XT is a good example,,, it plugs into the cig lighter but it actually runs off about 5 V and has a small transformer inside the plug.

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

If I connect directly the fuse panel, should I connect the negative feed like ruebarb did? Is there any reason to use plastic casing, and if so, is it ok to case the wires together?

Re: How to add another 12V Power Outlet

I am going to get the power directly from the fuse box, where should I send the negative lead?

Is there any reason to put a black plastic casing on the wires?

You have 2 good options for the ground
-tap into a factory ground wire
-Better tie into a factory ground point

Page 51 & 52 shows the ground points, the ground point in my pic is behind the switch plate. http://brockandbecca.com/files/fj/FJ_Electrical.pdf

I don't see any need for a protective wire sheath, I don't see the wires being in location where they would get hit by a moving part.
