XM Radio sound quality problem (there is a solution)
Good news for those of us that have XM radio and aren't happy with the sound quality.
I got a call from my buddy at Toyota today. He heard back from his product specialist at Toyota Corporate. Toyota has identified the XM radio sound quality issue as a wave equalization problem between the XM tuner and the FJ Jammer head unit. Since the problem resides in the head unit your dealer will have to swap out your head unit in order to fix the problem. Toyota is going to release a new head unit to fix the problem, but it will be about 6 months before the new head units are available.
Re: XM Radio sound quality problem (there is a solution)
Thats great news, now if only XM would give a free 30 day trial of their service to new owners like me who are still skeptical that Sat Radio quality is not all that its cracked up to be.
Re: XM Radio sound quality problem (there is a solution)
You guys with XM radio tick me off. All the Toyota engineers in Japan were working on getting XM tuner to work with the radio head unit, when these same engineers could have designed and put into production an FJ with sunroof, functional rear quarter windows, and forest green paint scheme.
Oh well, congratulations on getting their attention to identify the XM interface problem with the radio. Nice to see that Toyota was responsive to a real issue. Communication from Japan is so non-existent (silent), I sometimes wonder if we are heard, I guess this proves we are. It would be nice to get an acknowledge and then resolution, this let's us know something is being done.

can you ask your buddy if they will swap out your radio if you didn't purchase it from your local dealer(bought it online).
I think each dealer is going to be different and you should report the problem to your dealer and see what they do. I doubt they will check your options package against the actual options.

So will they send out a service bulletin? Do we need to do anything between now and then, besides not listen to music on the crappy Toyota XM system?
I don't know how they plan to notify people. I took my FJ in for warranty service on the radio. My dealer said they would let me know when the head units are available. This makes me believe that they have some way of flagging a customer record for a certain type of technical service bulletin. I also put a calendar event into my Outlook calendar for 4 months from now to check on the status.
Re: XM Radio sound quality problem (there is a solution)
Ok guys here's the scoop I got from Toyota tech support.
The problem is with the head unit not the XM reciever. The fix is to replace the head unit with an updated part.
The part number for the replacement head unit is the same as the original head unit. The reason for this is that when we order the replacement unit we don't order it from Toyota, we order it from Fujitsu as an exchange unit. This is the same as any other radio, amp, nav system or entertainment system. So what you need to do is bring your vehicle into the dealership so they can verify the problem. If they are unaware of the new head unit ask them to call tech support. They will then order you a replacement head unit from Fujitsu. This takes about five business day to get. Then they will replace your defective head unit with a new one.
There is not a TSB on this as of yet so if your dealer doesn't know about it they do need to call tech support about it.

I had my dealership call tech support and he was told the problem is in the XM receiver. Do you have a number and a name of someone at tech support that we can direct our dealership guys to contact?
Seems like everyone with a fix is just talking hotair and not providing any concrete useful information. Please stop addressing this fix unless you are able to give us something we can take to our dealership to prove that there is a fix and exactly what they need to replace.

Yes--to clarify, there is now a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin for '07 FJ Cruiser that was issued on June 28 to address those customers experiencing poor sound quality from the Toyota XM or SIRIUS satellite radio PIO/DIO accessory option. A revised radio has been developed to remedy this condition. Dealers will be able to order the new radio and then replace the existing radio receiver on those vehicles experiencing the poor sound quality.
Customers with specific complaints about this issue should contact their local Toyota dealer for the swap out, which is covered under Toyota's comprehensive warranty.
