Just use your squelch knob to eliminate the noise (hash). When you are close-by another CB'er (on a trail) you'll hear them OK with the squelch slightly open. If you want to hear a distant (weak) station that's when you open the squelch all the way.
Try and get the SWR to 1.5 or lower so you can take full advantage of your 4 watt output. A SWR of 2.0 equates to about 3.5 watts of power getting out from your FJ.
