need a resource for box building

for the past few weeks I have been using an old truck box to house my two 10" subs. I would like to upgrade to something that fits into the factory sub location, but cant really justify spending $400 for a box. Im fairly handy and like working on new things so I'm looking for a book or website that help explain the art of fiberglassing a sub box. I've repaired fiberglass body panels before, but never worked with it for box building. If anyone knows of a resource that help me out I would appreciate it.

Re: need a resource for box building

You still need to build a box/frame from wood and we use fleece blankets and chicken wire to mold with resin...and down here we make it a little hotter than normal. Then sand...sand...and sand somemore.

Re: need a resource for box building

awesome, thanks for the help guys. Ive already made templates for the bottom as well as back. I was just going to build a solid MDF box, but this gives me an opportunity to do something new.

Re: need a resource for box building

I'm currently working on one of these as well based on info from various websites. Here's what I've done so far:

Tape the passenger side recess where the box will go thoroughly with blue masking tape, being sure to get it in the mounting holes (remove the hanger things). You will need to make a front part to the box (behind the seat) using some cardboard to lay the fiberglass on.

Mask everything else with plastic

Laid up 3 layers of fiberglass cloth (easier to work with than mat)

Popped the fiberglass shell out (this is the back of the box)

Reinforce shell with some more layers and ribs

Ordered a 3/4" MDF speaker ring and terminals off e-bay

To do:
Mount ring with dowels and then stretch fleece

Apply more fiberglass on the inside

Sand smooth

I plan to cover it with bed liner.

This will come to about $75 I'll let you know how it looks.

Re: need a resource for box building

check out the Nov 2007 issue of Car Audio and Electronics. It is their annual DIY issue. Pg 78 starts an article titled "The Basics of Fiberglass Fabrication: How to Fabricate an Enclosure".

I just fiberglassed for the first time making a custom face plate for a Z2. It is fairly easy to do as long as you are using a flat finish as you can go back and correct mistakes until it looks right.

Good luck

Re: need a resource for box building

cut a ring, frame in the back section, top, sides, and corners if needed. be sure to rabbet all edges that the fleece will be attaching to, including the outer edge of the ring. stretch the fleece and attach using CA glue and a staple gun. coat the fleece with resin until it is all soaked through evenly. once it dries, take off all the nasty bumps and rough edges with a DA grinder or die grinder with a roll lock sanding bit. depending on the woofer, you may want to apply mat the the back side of the fleeced section. if not, apply bondo or kitty hair for added strength ( it has chopped mat in it). i prefer evercoat or rage gold brand. then sand again witha DA this time. make it perfectly smooth to the point where you cant see any sanding scratches if you want to paint it. if not, make it smooth and cover it with whatever desired.
