Has anyone taken off...

The flat passenger panel? Is there any space behind it? wires? airbag?

Others have considered mouting computers in front of it and I was thinking of flush mounting a screen in it.

Does anyone know if thats possible or whats behind the passenger flat panel?

Re: Has anyone taken off...

I've seen a few people who put a 7" monitor in there but the air bag internals are pretty close behind there. If you take the glove box out you can see what I'm talking about. You should be good for a few inches though. I'm not sure that part can be taken out as it looks like it's one solid piece with the rest of the dash.

Re: Has anyone taken off...

I was hoping to cut out a spot in the panel, hoping to have about 1" deep so I could flush mount the screen and since most panel/tablet PC's have the inputs on the bottom, I was hoping to keep access to the panel through the glove box.

I have seen a few mounted ON the passenger panel but none flush mounted. It would certainly be tricky.

Re: Has anyone taken off...

I was thinking along the same lines as you. it be nice to have a little computer mounted in the dash since their is such a large opening. I was looking at it and it seems their is just enough to but a shallow monitor in but the key issue is the air bag. I just dont want to f*&k up the function of it.

Someone is going to have to take off that panel to see how much room is behind it.

Re: Has anyone taken off...

You can squeeze the backs of your glove box when it is all the way down and that will allow it to go all the way down to look behind there

Re: Has anyone taken off...

There isn't much room, there is a crap load of wires and connectors back there. I am sure you could relocate some of it but not sure if it would be worth it.

****edit*****
Why not mount the screen/tablet flat on the dash then mold around it to bring the dash out to the farthest part of the top round part? Do you now what I am talking about?

Re: Has anyone taken off...

The reason why I wouldnt mount it on the outside is because it wouldnt look smooth enough.

Although some like all the wires and gagets hanging and open, I dont and I need a more cutom instal if it was possible. If its not possible then ill go another direction.

I was thinking two things...

Get a panel type computer with a small wireless keyboard and mount it flush with the dash.

Or

just get a small laptop and flush mount the screen then you could fold down the keyboard whenever you wanted to use it. Probably having to add a mechanical resistor to give resistance so you can type on the keyboard.

I'm just thinking.

Also with the new mac air any recess in the car would only have to be 1/4".

Re: Has anyone taken off...

If you found someone competent in such things you could have them build up the area between the two rounds on the dash and have it look very smooth. If you did that they could cut out the part that is currently between the rounds and with that gone plus the distance given with the build up you would have a decent amount of room to mount something. I am considering doing something over there. (well not me but someone talented in such things)

Re: Has anyone taken off...

I wanted to flush mount my GPS in that location. There is a thread about a GPS and it was installed with a build up of that panel. With all of the airbags we have to be pretty careful where we drill and cut!I'll look for that thread.
