DRLs fire up Aux lights

I installed 2 sets of aux lights on my roof bar and used two relays, one for each pair, linked into one OEM light switch. Originally I took the Switch feed direct to the battery and this allowed me to turn the lights on and off at will - regardless of any lights or the ignition being on. ALL WAS FINE - NO PROBLEMS. I decided though, that I wanted to ONLY be able to turn on the lights when the Hi Beams were on so I tapped the switch feed into the Hi Beam fuse in the main fusebox under the hood. everything is still fine and I have a choice - I can leave the switch in the ON position and the aux lights only fire up when I flash my Hi Beams, or I can leave the switch in the OFF position and just flash the OEM Hi Beams. HOWEVER, if I leave the switch in the ON position, when I start up the FJ and the DRL's light up, they fire up the Aux lights too, (without the hibeams on). I can either Flash the hi beams or push the switch to OFF to turn off the Aux lights - just as I normally would.
Q: Anyone know why they're firing up with the DRLs?
Apologies in advance for this rambling question. Stu

Re: DRLs fire up Aux lights

Sounds like a good idea now you got me thinking about doing it.... but I am thinking that it has to do with where to you taped..

I would wire them so the switch with turn them on and off when ever you want like to had it at firs then run another line from the him beam to the relays to trigger the aux lights...

I think I am going to look in to this...

Sounds like a good idea - i just can't understand what's making the DRLs trigger the Aux lights on startup. it's bizarre.

Re: DRLs fire up Aux lights

I think that on all vehicles with headlight DRL's, they use the high beam filaments, with the voltage reduced to 85% of normal. So you're relays are only seeing 11 volts but that's enough to switch them.

Re: DRLs fire up Aux lights

Yes, the DRLs are your high beams at lower wattage. You might not be able to make that happen unless you disconnect the harness that controls your DRLs. With that disconnected, it should work the way you want it to.

Re: DRLs fire up Aux lights

If you use a blank fuse spot in the stock harness you should be able to run the aux lights when you want except when the vehicle is off. That might be an easier solution than trying to tap the hi beams? Just my .02

Where do you pick up the ground for the relay?

You should tap the high beam take-off from the hi-beam power wire before the DRL circuit out by the headlights...

Thanks for the solutions guys - that's my weekend sorted then!
What colour's the live wire on the high beam? (being lazy as I am) Stu
