Help: Kenwood Install

I ordered a Kenwood DNX7100 from crutchfields.com. I followed their basic wiring instructions, but I have some problems. Their wiring harness has only 2 connectors and I noticed the FJ has 3. What is the 3rd connector for? When I plug in the unit with just the 2, I don't get the sub and limited rear speakers. I also don't have the steering wheel controls. I got a SWI-JACK but for the life of me, I cant figure out how to wire it. How do you identify what wires go to the steering wheel???

Any tips?

I am about to give up and have it professionally installed

Re: Help: Kenwood Install

You have to have an adapter to use the steering wheel controls. If you look at the crutchfield page you will see this blurb:

-compatible with most factory steering wheel audio controls (adapter required)

The third connector is for the steering wheel controls.

The third connector with the smaller, narrowly placed connectors is for the steering wheel controls. The other 2 connectors that look like the harness with larger, wider spaced connectors contain all the speaker and power connections.

The steering controls are a bit more involved and I don't have them. The subwoofer needs a power signal. In the FJ it seems to use the blue power antenna wire. Do a search for subwoofer install and the Pioneer AVIC-D3 install as much of this is written up on those threads. Good luck.

I got the SWI-JACK steering wheel adapter from crutchfield. It is a generic adapter for different brands and models. It has 6 separate wires that you have to connect with the wires from the steering wheel controls. Since the wires from the steering wheels is part of the 3rd unused jack, not sure how to wire the stupid thing.

Hi Terahex
Could you share what harness you are using to install your Kenwood? ( I just bought a Kenwood DNX5120 and are gathering some info for the install)

Thank you

Crutchfield lists it as "120701761 Toyota/Geo Wire harness"

Re: Help: Kenwood Install

For the steering wheel controls you only use 3 wires on the SWI-JACK: power, ground, and the white wire. A 150 ohm resistor goes on the white wire and then you use I believe pins 6, 7, and 8 on the steering wheel control adapter. Pin 6 is grounded and pin 7 is hooked to the white wire before the resistor and pin 8 is hooked after. It's been a while since I did my install but I believe this is right. Programming isn't too bad, just make sure you read the instructions carefully as you have to hit the program button to skip any controls you aren't using. Good luck.
