Stock Door Speaker Switch out

I decided it was a nice day to do some work on the Raptor. I have been wanting to switch out the cheep paper speakers that come in the doors for awhile now. I went to Wally World and found a pair of SONY 6x9 that were reasonable. I'm not a big stereo fanatic like I was when I was younger, but these should do all of what I need.

I removed one of the stock speakers, trimmed it up to use as a templet for my new speaker housing to fit in. I then mounted the new speaker to the wooden housing. I went to Lowes and bought a small piece of 1/4" Oak plywood, it cost $5.00. I then drilled the holes where the screws were going to go. I used screws with a locknut on the back side to attach the speakers to the wood. Here is a pic of it ready to be inserted into the door.

I then removed the old stock speaker, what a piece of crap....I'm kind of surprised they still use these cheep paper speakers nowadays...I guess somethings never change.

Here you can see them both side by side...

Now all I had to do was splice the exsitiing wires with the new speaker wires and bolt the whole thing in. All done, it took all of 45 min to do everything. I just thought I would pass it on for those that want to change out your stock speakers.

Finished Product.

Kind of along these lines.
Could you cut out the plug from the old speaker and then splice the wires after the plug?

Great job again.

Yeh, I looked at doing that, but the little white plug appeared to be a PITA to get un fused from the housing, so I just spliced the wires together.

Re: Stock Door Speaker Switch out

Really nice, Mike! Thanks for that post. When we did the paint mod and took the doors apart, Komombo showed us all what lousy speakers were in the FJ's. It's definitely going to sound better inside your truck.

Go ahead, blast that Barry Manilow now!

Here are pictures of when we did mine. If you need clarification, let me know. Some are a little blurry.
