DJ Qube's angled stereo install (pics).

I installed my Alpine nav unit this weekend, and didn't like that the angle of the face was perfectly vertical, as the LCD screen appears a bit dimmer when viewed from an angle. Alpine's screen, as well as most others, have a motorized angle adjustment feature, but the smallest angle setting is somewhere near 25 degrees, which was too much for me. I wanted the monitor to sit at about 15 degrees from vertical, which is the perfect viewing angle and looks the best with the angled fascia.
Here's the pics...

1) Here's the angle I wanted the face to sit at... about 15 degrees.

2) From the backside, here's how the head unit would normally install. The bottom of the head unit is parallel to the A/C control harness support just underneath it.

3) Here's the angle I wanted to install the head unit. The underside of the head unit angles down and almost touches the A/C control harness support.

4) When you put the front fascia back into the dashboard, you can see that the head unit would hit the black plastic bar that crosses the dashboard between the A/C control harness support and the normal head unit install location. It's gotta go!

(I put down the clear plastic so I wouldn't get plastic shavings in my dash)

5) Have some fun with the Dremel. The piece to be removed doesn't appear to be integral to the structural integrity of the dash, so out it goes.

6) With the plastic bar removed, there is room for the head unit to be installed at the correct angle.

7) Punch some new holes in the original metal brackets to give you the proper mounting height, depth, and angle.

8) Aaah, much better!

I highly suggest this for anyone installing an Alpine IVA-W200 specifically. I'm not sure how the NAV units from other companies are, but the IVA-W200 doesn't have the optimum tilt angle setting when installed normally.

awesomoe man, may I ask how much the system is? And is the system reliable? My buddy has an after market Pioneer and its off sometimes. And is very complex. I like the Magellan that you get with the Hertz cars, they are straight forward and accurate.

Hanzo,
I've got the new Magellan roadmate 800 and love it. It's on sale at costco for $599 plus another $100 off cupon/Rebate available thru Costco, in the add you get at the door.
I've just got mine stuck to the window for now right above the Temp/Inclineometer for now. I'm trying to figure out a way to mount it in the drivers side glove box, and to get power to it.

My vote would/will go for the Magellan.

Install looks great, but how about the side/space adapter? can't really see it from the photos you provided, but isn't that also connected to the head unit to fill in the extra space on the side? can u provide a font view?

I'm getting my unit via UPS today, can't wait to get it in and will consider this adjustment! great job!

You can angle the adapters on the side the same way you angle the brackets, but honestly, I wasn't happy with the way the side bracket adapters that fill the gap fit on the Alpine (and probably other double dins as well). There is a small gap at the top and bottom that is a bit noticable. I ordered a sheet of 1/8" black textured PVC that I will use as a custom adapter as soon as it arrives. I'll post pics.

Re: DJ Qube's angled stereo install (pics).

DJ Qube,

Just got my Alpine w200 from crutchfields today. how did ya do the wiring? is there a way to bypass the video w/o purchasing a PAC tr-7? what if I just ground the brake and handbrake (since I would have no clue where to patch these in) for now? would everything still work?

gonna install tommorrow! and so far preliminary fittings show that I will probably do your mod!

thanks for the suggestion!

This is what i did for the video bypass.first I installed the pac tr7 and it went bad in a day.Pac tr7 are known for going bad or going out of programming. So next I just did switches instead.I hooked the foot brake to the dimmer and the hand brake to a two sided switch.one side to the hand brake wire and one side to ground. Now all I have to do is switch on my lights and flick the switch a few times and I have video.hope that helps

I've decided to go the switch route instead of the tr-7 route.

where can i find and how to identify the needed wires to splice into?

thanks

using switches, you mentioned you hooked up the hand brake wire via switch to ground. can the foot brake be also done in this manner to ground also so I can hook up two switches? or does the foot brake wire need some voltage?
