Posting the same basic info in another thread, I to have a space mounting problem with my sidebander (to large) but I like the radio. Have built an overhead console, but I don't want to cut into headliner for fear of destroying it($1000 replacement). I may pick up the Cobra 75 for now. I've had one of those hand held cb's in the past (don't remember brand) didn't like it much. I think it's in a box in the garage somewhere, You can have it if you want it, PM me.
No matter what radio you choose, make sure you get a good antenna. The portables are convenient, but transmitting and reception range is very limited. Connect an external atenna and you will be fine.
x2 on the Uniden Pro510XL. Great compact radios. I have a like new one for $25 if anyone is interested. (SOLD)
The magnetic mount antenna will work fine for the Midland. I had one for the FJ during the Mojave run, and it worked well. 2 points though....1) I lost the antenna after the Mojave run when I stored it in the garage, and 2) the Firestick antenna gets better transmission.
I just (Today) orderd the 75 WX ST on ebay, $94.00 shipping included, brand new in box, the seller is Sellit697, says he has 19 available, iv been looking for a while and its the best price iv seen.
