wiring inquiries

ok i finally got my PIAA 520 fogs today, and have some questions about the wiring. i have read the posts that people have left about add a circuit, what exactly is this and what would you rate the difficulty as? also another question is if i disconnect the battery will i have to bring the truck back to the dealership to get my key remotes reprogrammed?

also with the 520 fogs has anyone had any issues with them melting the bumper?

thx

Re: wiring inquiries

Let's take these one at a time.

520's will get hot and the housing will melt plastic if you run them for extended periods. Especially if you have them on and are not moving.
I recommend about a 2 inch space between the housing and any plastic.

The add-a-circuit is a way to get signal power to your switch. It is not for powering your lights by any means. Your lights should be run from the battery like in this post. A little help from the Wiring Gurus??

The add-a-circuit would be where the blue wire goes to the fuse box.

Keyless remotes will not need re-programming, they have their own power source and memory.

Re: wiring inquiries

ok cool, here is the set up

i plan on mounting the fogs to the OEM bumper via the holes underneath the cover, i would like to have full control over the fogs so i can turn them on and off at will regardless if the headlights are on, mainly to also prevent overheating and melting the bumper cover, i don't think that i would have them on for more than and hour or two at the most and i would turn them off when i stop the truck to keep the heat down too

i'm not too bad when it comes to knowing a 12V system but i'm still sketchy with bigger projects such as this, i'm sure the install is apples and oranges i'm just not sure on all the steps :P i want to do the job right so as not to have any mishaps after it is installed :P

i think i read somewhere that i would need a part from the dealer to be able to turn the fogs on and off with the headlights still on, true?

Unless you are talking about an OEM switch to mount in the dash then no. If you run it like the diagram I showed in the other post it is a completely separate system.

If you want to run it with the existing factory aux light circuit already wired into the FJ, that may require some more factory parts but I'm not too familiar with that. In fact I thing I looked at it once in the wiring diagrams but with all the lights I have it would not support the current or the different configuration so I just built my own system.

If I have time tomorrow I will try to pull out the wiring diagram and review it a bit.

I would be surprised if someone has not already posted about using the existing circuit and I think I remember reading a thread about it but you'll have to do some searching.

In fact check the tech section articles http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...ml#post1110534

and this post has most of what I think you are looking for Hella Lights, Manik Light Bar, Dual Battery Kit, OEM Switches, Hidden Wires Installed

Re: wiring inquiries

ok "phew" i though toyota had gone and done something stupid i am going to keep it a whole separate system from anything else that way i have full control on the lights, now here is another kinda dumb question but if i hook the power feed cables right to the battery will it drain the battery when not in use? i would assume that it wouldn't unless i leave the lights on

Re: wiring inquiries

I was thinking about using the Toyota switch and everything, but it was so easy to use the PIAA switch and I actually like it. Ron

PS: I spent years as a electronic/engineering tech too.. LOL
