Stereo upgrade my own way

Okay I am on a role today. Here is what we did with our stereo. We got Titanium FJ, CQ and AL. So with the money we saved not getting Toyota's upgrades we added our own. I was first upset I did not get the dash cluster, but I have it on my AVIC-D2. See pic. We went through Circuit City, and was really impressed with them.

Re: Stereo upgrade my own way

Love the rear sub, what size is it I actually built a box like that for an 8" on the other side so I wouldn't lose my storage area. What is it covered with? Cost? do tell more. My attempt to cover mine went so bad if I could get one done at this point I think I would.

Re: Stereo upgrade my own way

The sub is a 10" Kicker, and right now it is not covered. The cost was I would say speaker and custom built box put us close to $450. It is well worth the money. The sound is awesome. We also added an amp under the passenger seat, and replaced all the front speakers with polk audios. I left the headliner speakers. It was not worth the hassle. I am very leary about no cover on the speaker, so I am looking. If I come across something, I will post it.

as high as your sub sits i wouldnt worry about a cover.what is used to hold the box in place? For a circuit city job it does not look bad at all.

Re: Stereo upgrade my own way

Yeah, we got really lucky our salesman has been installing stereos for 10 years, and loves it. He was really excited to install one in an FJ, so I think we got a little bit of special attention. The heightt really isn't in issue. The put it pretty flush with the back seat. The only loss we had was the cargo net, which I was not planing on using anyway. I just did not want to loss the cargo area space. He went over the mounting of it before, and I just can't exactly recall, but it is sturdy and set in place.

Re: Stereo upgrade my own way

Here are some pics of my homemade custom sub box similar to this. I just did an 8" (just wanted a little bass). It is roughly .50 cu foot so I may find a small 10" if I want later, I already had the 8". Corners are slightly rounded and after sealing then and sanding smoothing I just primered it and used Rustoleum textured like I did on my bumpers (1 touch up can for everything!)To keep it a little stealth the sub is sort of corner loaded in the part of the shelf so it sits about 4" away from the wall.

Re: Stereo upgrade my own way

The cluster is the speedometer, inclinometer (?) slope, and compass. It is really similar to what comes on the dash with the upgraded packages. Mine was only a CQ, so I did not get it. You can select a few different ones.

I'm confused about the cluster showing in the picture on the AVIC-D2. Is it a special model or do all AVIC-D2's have this capibility? This is really cool, I am kicking myself for not getting the dash cluster or the upgraded stereo system so this could be exactly what I need, but I'm a little confused about what to get. Help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.
