Thumbs up My $82 dash panel swap

Instead of a wash of silver, I'm now looking at black cherry surrounding my fj jammer.

Interesting idea...
I was going with either black or blue... the interior was the reason blue was acceptable because I liked the way they brought the colors inside. Black was just... black. Any plans to take it a step further and swap your door panels to match?

Re: My $82 dash panel swap

Tell me about the swap was it difficult?

$82 was that the cost for the dealer for the part.

Thanks

Re: My $82 dash panel swap

Are you planning to do the door inserts too? I might like to buy the silvers from you/someone for my FJ, IF.... the price is right...

I like the contrast; may do it to mine.

I recall Matt/TRD saying some time back that one cannot purchase only the colored inserts - you have to replace the entire door panel, and the price was about $400 (!).

These guys are close, but you have to buy whole kits, and not just the colored-keyed panels.

For some reason, they charge an additional $100 for Black Cherry - guess what color I have......

Re: My $82 dash panel swap

Oh, and here's the odd kicker:

http://www.dashkitspecialties.com/TAFJ07OA.html

For some reason, you can get a complete kit that covers about every exposed piece of plastic in the FJ ****pit with your OEM color, except for the kit (above) which is the only offering that includes the door inserts. Comes in about 1000 other colors, but not the stock FJ colors.

Weird....

Re: My $82 dash panel swap

I got mine from Mechanicsville Toyota in VA. Their price: $80.45 plus ten bucks shipping. So technically this thread should read my $90 dash panel swap. There is a supporting vendor here that sells it for $82 bucks which is what I remembered. See this thread: Is this a brilliant idea, or what?

as for the install:

1)Unscrew the phillips screw at the bottom of the thin silver trim piece on each side of the colored panel and lift them up by jimmying them (pull them up and out while you slowly wiggle them from side to side and front to back) until their clips give way. Pretend they are hinged on top (they are not) and it makes it easier. Also see grangers sticky post on installing the AVR for photos.

2)Take the phillips screw out on each side of the colored center piece.

3)Start at the bottom and sides and pull out the center piece by jimmying it out (slowly wiggle it from front to back).

4)Disconnect the three electrical connectors and pull out old trim piece.

5)Reconnect connectors to new trim piece and pop it back in.

6)Put screws back and then put trim pieces back and their screws.

Ten minutes. Easy peasy!
