December 22 of 2005, I was in Columbus Ohio (on business) when I received a call at 1130 pm.
My best friends Wife (New Mother of a newborn baby boy) was tragically killed in an unexplainable one car traffic accident.
I drove 16 hours thru the night in a blizzard to get back.

The day after the Funeral I started a one man quest for the truth about what happened to my friends Wife.

Nobody knew anything about an EDR. I found some people who did and now a little boy is going to have some answers and a future that while it is going to be without his Mom - He won't have to worry much about anything else.
The boxes are there for a reason and it isn't what you guys are worried about and the Insurance Company was appreciative of the answers Too.

You can't shut it off or alter it in anyway. if you trully do not want it - sell the car.

I hate to be callous and cold, and in that situation it can and would be a good thing. But I do not want my actions in my FJ to be recorded, good or bad, and I think we should have the choice of whether we want it in their or not. I want it out of my FJ.

Well, You don't have a choice so get over it or sell it.
Opinions - everybodys right.
When they are based in Fact (vs emotionalism) its a wonderful thing.

Re: Do we have a black box in the FJ?

Chill.

The ECU does good things, like automatically adjusts your timing when you put in E85 gas. It also helps you keep the truck if you live in CA (or a state/county with steep emissions standards). If it's an automatic, it likely also manages engine load and shift points. All of which are designed for your benefit.

As I posted in the other thread... but can't find it (grumble) at the moment, I'll re-iterate. :

1> The likleyhood that there exists any information beyond the last 5 minutes is extremley remote. (As there really is no point in maintaining it, it's unlikley there is a Hard-Drive in the ECU, and (even with 4 GB flash cards) there's sufficient information coming INTO the unit sufficiently fast that recording for any extended period of time seems unlikely.
2> Furthermore, although the Owners manual does list some information that is "recorded" it is vague on the extent (time, type) and resolution of the recording. It's unclear what, if anything, could be deduced and how that differs from what could be determined by examining the scene of an accident.
3> What are you worried about? No, Really. It's not like the finding of fault (which (I believe) the officer does at the scene) is going to include a trip to the Toyota dealership. If it's supoenas (sic)... well... you likley knew you were doing something illegal to begin with.
