rear view camera

If you have the nav system, is a rearview camera part of it? The reason for the question is that it might then imply that there is camera cable already strung through the vehicle. Anyone know where the ends are?

I got my $70 rearview camera yesterday and it looks really good. Test in the kitchen shows a very nice color pic. Mounting is a threaded barrel, with tapered washers to allow aiming.

Would like to use an already-installed cable if it's there.

Re: rear view camera

You must wire the truck yourself it doesn't come pre wired for the rear view camera.

For video signal you would need a Coaxial cable or sometihng purposely built for this. You should not use any spare wire for this purpose. However, techincally it may (will) work but it will degrade the video quality significantly. If you have a spare cables you might want to try it out but I recommend using a mini coaxial cable for this. It doesnt take that much longer to install.

Re: rear view camera

Ah, too bad there are no pre-installed cables. Yes, I understand that I'll need coax for the video. If I'm smart about it, I can use the same coax for the camera's 12 volts also. I don't want to power the camera off the backup lights because I suspect the system may be valuable for watching the blind spots while driving (forward), too.

If you want to go that route, hook it to the back up light or thru the gear shifter, add another switch for secondary 12V input with diodes (to avoid back up lights from coming on unintentionally) so you can turn off and on when you want. There will be time when you dont want the screen to be on....
