Amps: Alpine, Focal, JL, Memphis, etc. Subwoofer: Alpine, Memphis, Focal, JL, Morel, etc. Amps and subwoofers are separated. Go to the photo gallery on this form and take a look at my audio/video upgrade, put fj1 into the search engine.

The first thing we need to know is, what is your budget? Second thing is, what would you like the sub to do? Are you a huge rap fan and enjoy annoying the neighbors, or are you into Jazz and Rock and enjoy a rounded music experience in your car? Do you want to incorporate a stealth installation and retain the SUV in your FJ, or would you be willing to give up some valuable realestate in the back? Would you consider an upgrade of the rest of the system in the vehicle? Or, do you want just a little bit more roundness or low end to your music?

These questions are the starting point. You can throw $200 worth of amplified subs in the back or $10K worth of custom enclosures and amps into your FJ. If you don't do it right, it's just a waste of money.

I had 3 stores about 10 years ago when custom audio was in it's prime. After thousands of installed systems, each one bottled down to the above questions unless of course we are going for show or competition. That's a whole different ball game my friend....

I jsut want the rock rounded out. rounded out with low ends.

I would go to a place that installs automotive stereos. They can do everything for you.

Perfect! That makes it very easy. I would purchase an 8" powered Bazooka tube then. You can find them used on ebay for around that price, and have your local shop install for you usually for around $50. If the 8" is too big for your planned area, then they do make a 6" model that is smaller. The 6" is more like what the FJ comes with as far as sound quality, vrs the 8" that will give you much more low end.

I found 2 8" tubes on Ebay for around $40 each. They were not in perfect shape, but worked as they should and looked great with a quick paint job. I added an amp for around $100 to power them and it was the perfect addition for my 99 Cherokee. These are dummy proof in design and operation. No box to build, no woofer to choose and if you do blow a woofer, you can direct replace them with just about any brand that will fit. I replaced mine with JL's about a year after I bought them due to blow out. Now they are twice as good as before.

Good luck on your project!

Re: want a subwoofer...clueless

Could always get a stock one off ebay, or put up a WANTED in the Parts for Sale Forum. I like the way it integrates and looks match an already nice interior. Wiring is dead simple. I bought one off ebay as subs are not available in Canada (neither is 2WD but no one misses that up here). I don't think it's the sub for you if you really want to annoy the neighbours but if you want a more complete sound it does just great.
