Circuit City is FJ unfriendly ... need alarm help!

I had a very frustrating weekend trying to add an alarm to my FJ. My day started with a stop in Moreno Valley at the Circuit City. I wanted to get my Viper 5000 alarm system put into the FJ and they told me over the phone that it would be no problem.

I chose this particular store because the head installer use to work at Toyota and knows his sh*t when working on Toyotas. He worked on two past Toyota of mine and people who seen his work commend his clean installs.

Anyway, I’m at the store when it opens and I tell the staff I want my alarm installed and need a new remote. First, they steer me to buy a Python alarms system for $500 that had only half of the feature as my Viper.

Then they said they had no remotes for my unit. Viper and Python are both made by Directed Electronics so they should be compatible since both replacement remotes listed the same model #.

Then the guy said if I add remote start they would need the access number for the chip that is in my key. I was told by my sales person to never ever give that code to anyone unless I’m ordering a new key from the dealer.

Well, after debating what we were going to do they told me they can’t work on the FJ because they have no schematics for the vehicle. I told them I could download the schematics for them and Toyota wiring would be the same for the ignition as similar vehicles such as the 2006 Tacoma.

After that they came back and said they really don’t want to work on a very new car such as the FJ because they don’t know what to expect that something may be different and they may not install the alarm right.

They suggested that I go to a “mom & pop” store so they could “experiment” with my ride. I left pissed off but happy because I would rather set up my alarm and screw it up then have someone else do it and f**k it up.

Now to you all, has anyone installed an aftermarket alarm yet (shop or DIY)? If you have or know how to install do you have any first timer tips?

O ya, F!@* Circuit City!

Not to hijack, but your nick reminded me of something.

This:

Anyway, sorry about your dealings with CC. It seems that very few places are customer oriented any more

Circuit City Blows.

They wanted 200 to install my stereo on the phone. Then they made an appointment and quoted me $300 plus alot of stuff to make it easier to install and make them more money. Once I bought the equipment they wanted 400 to put it in (I guess it was because I bought it from somewhere else). Anyways I installed it myself in 2 hours. Too bad some crackhead uninstalled it in 20 minutes. Should have bought the alarm.

Bos: I heard the factory alarm is easily bypassed if the pro knows their toyota electronics. How do you like the factory alarm?

Dragon: nice pic. Did you create that?

Re: Circuit City is FJ unfriendly ... need alarm help!

I wouldn’t be so upset if they were talking to my wife or someone who has absolutely no clue about installing an alarm but hell Toyota doesn’t create new wiring for every vehicle, more like they use the same core wiring and add for the specific vehicle. That’s like me saying dude I can’t work on your FJ because Toyota uses wiring specially imported from the moon and until we understand it we will be unable to help you. If someone made it, someone can modify it. Laziness is not an excuse!

Re: Circuit City is FJ unfriendly ... need alarm help!

I installed the Viper 560XV in my FJ. No surprises, has remote start locks/hatch release etc. They don't need your key code, it doesn't have an OEM ignition immobilizer in it. There are no ignition modules needed. PM me your fax number and I'll fax you a complete wiring diagram, from DEI.

I like it very much but I'd be curious to hear some facts that back this up...

Re: Circuit City is FJ unfriendly ... need alarm help!

Bos: After my CC morning I headed to Longo Toyota to find out if they would install the viper they recommended the factory alarm. After talking to the guy at the parts counter he told me I should go to Al & Eds (extremely high priced) because he said that he knows that there has been Toyotas (FJ specific???) with factory alarms that have been stolen because "knucklehead" employees who get fired let the thieves know how to bypass the system. I don't know if he meant Longo or just dealers in the LA area. I have always thought that aftermarket alarm was the way to go because you can customize the alarm and features as you want. Adding room for an addition deterrent because who knows what you have or how you installed it (i.e. GPS tracking, failsafe backup). I’ll look into the facts though.
