I just bought my FJ and was looking forward to putting in the factory XM tuner and equipment.
The parts guy told me they have had problems with the tuners communicating with the FJammer radio units since January and the tuners are not available at this time. They don't know when the problem will be resolved.
Has anyone else been told about this problem? Are the ones on the TRD Source website affected too? I haven't found any history on this forum about it.
I didn't want to install a roady or roady XT or the commander, been there done that. One of the big reasons I bought the FJ was the capability of adding XM controlled by the factory head unit and steering wheel controls.
FM Modulated or aux input set ups have their drawbacks. The best sound is one that can be integrated in with the head unit itself, next best would be an aux connection, and last the FM Modulated. I don't want the mess of input wires and power cords strung up all over the place. I would consider the XM Roady XT mount kit for $40 bucks, where I could use the XT unit that is on my BMW K1200LT motorcycle as a cheap alternative.
I found out yesterday, that there is a problem with the communication between the tuner and the head unit. I spoke to David at TRD Source and asked him what he knew. He stated, yes Toyota pulled them off the market and is expected to have the problem sorted out and new units will be available in November.
I went through a similar thing with my Prius, the dealers didn't know you could put factory XM in it. It ended up being the same kit used in the Camry Solara. Installed it myself, no issues. A week later they started installing them on Priuses. Looking to do the same with the FJ.

David-
Trying to understand. Are you saying you are getting a solara/prius kit OR waiting until the Nov. Fix ??
I was viewing the AUX as a temp fix until the HU issue is solved.
Some follow up to the XM issue. I saw some XM modules and tuners being sold on http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=330023483326 from a Toyota dealer. I wrote them and asked if these were the ones that Toyota were having issues with or the 'fixed' ones.
This is what they replied: "actually the problem was with the radio head units. if the satellite sounds 'mono' instead of 'stereo', any toyota dealership will exchange your radio head unit. and yes, these are the new released units, now that they have fixed the head units."
I'm using a Inno in my change holder with a custom mount that I made. I connect through the AUX and I'm happy with it.
The downside is I can't use the steering wheel controls.
The upside is I can take it out and use it else where without having to buy another unit (i.e. a rental car, in my shop, while I workout, etc). Also I can record songs load it with MP3's, time shift audio programing.
If your going to go out and buy a XM unit look at the XM Inno it's only about 50 bucks more then the Toyota and it's 100 times the radio. It's portable so you can listen to live content while walking around not just pre-recording content like the little doggie company(sorry Sirus users )
If you want to save money the Roady or the SkyFi's are the way to go.

No, I will wait for the new XM units to come out in November. The Camry/Solara Kit works on the Prius.
I have heard of this Mono vs. Stereo issue before, but the problem they stated was something completely different. It was more of a control issues and not being able to tune or change channels.
I have a portable XM I can use in the meantime, just want the clean fully functioning factory unit in my FJ.
I just purchased the Roady XT, and I am goint to run with that until Christmas time. Then with presents in hand I may put in the installed XM mod from Toyo or I might pull a Grainger and do an Avic or the like. I am not sure though....
We will see, I had to do something, considering I trade my old XM equipment with my old trade and I don't want the auction guys enjoying my XM subscription more than a day or so.
