Odometer tech question

My FJ was vandalized inside. They smashed up my odometer and other parts of the interior.

I found a replacement odometer, but have a question.

Do I have to go to the dealership to program the correct kilometer value into it,
or does the value come from the ECM (car computer) making it plug and play ready to go.

A odometer removal guide might help me out too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

C2K

Re: Odometer tech question

Why not claim it on insurance and have a pro fix it?

Re: Odometer tech question

I'll bet that the information is sent to the gauge/display from the computer. If not, it seems like it would be too easy to "roll back" the odometer.

How can you be suspicious. Nobody can get a windhield and C2k found an adometer. Isn't it true that every time a car gets vandelized they smash the odometer? I don't even find it strange that there's no mention of other damage.

Yep - those odometers are the first thing that those scamps go for during a break-in, aren't they?

Re: Odometer tech question

Hmmm, why do people always suggest foul play???
I know my claim does sound a bit fishy.

If you all need me to elaborate a bit further...

The total damage wasn't that bad.
The odometer was smashed. The radio was scratched and an attempt was made to pry it out. (I'll just get a custom deck now instead of the stock radio)
No damage to the exterior of the car.

I guess the thief got all pissed off when he couldn't get the deck out, so
in return he smashed up my odometer.

I'm pretty capable in fixing things myself and seldomly ask for help.
Its a lease and i'm sure if I bring it in for service, they will charge me an arm and a leg.
I'm not going to claim it with insurance, so I can pay 4 times the price of the
repair through insurance hikes.

I want this repaired asap so if a cop stops me, they don't resort to towing my car.

Re: Odometer tech question

Dude, typically insurance companies do not raise rates for a comprehensive (other than collision) claim. Getting it fixed by the dealer would be the best bet. I do understand if you have a high deductible and can fix it for less, but if it amounts to more than that, make the claim.

Why would the cops tow your car....last time I checked they do not check milage for traffic stops. This would only be an issue of you tried to sell the vehicle.
