Day two.
Thanks to Brendon,a friend of my roommate (Peetie) for helping me all day. I owe you a case of beer, or whatever you drink....
For starters...Brendon ran the 4gauge power wire from battery to distrubution block.
As well as the grounding distribuiton block wiring.
Then he worked on the RCA's from headunit to amp/sub (3 pairs, left/right/sub)
In the meantime, I was working on the dash speakers. Polk 4" front and rear....lets start with the fronts.
Line them up in the opening, turn the speaker to get 3 outta 4 screws and mark those points with a sharpie...
Didn't fit with tweeter grill...
Predrill the screws with a drill bit, and fasten them down with drywall screws. Had to shorten one of them up, it hit the sheetmetal below...but the other two were clear. My roommate Peetie suggested that I fill in the gap around the speakers, cause it will sound better when finished. I used 'duct seal' which is bascially clay that I use at work. Non shrinking, putty like material. Works great....hope it works in this envrionment!
Installed front speakers....some have said that a 4" wont fit up front...well, it didnt at first. The top of the tweeter kept the trim panel from sitting flush. I got angry at everyone/everything....my poor dog took a lotta yelling today....
Peetie suggested I pry off the tweeter grill, cause I was REALLY close to making the speaker fit. Pulled it back out, and pryed out the useless dust cover over the tweet. Reinstalled it, and the panel FIT!
YAY! Celebration break #1. Passenger side done, with tweeter grill gone, and ductseal installed. Here is the finished tirim after I ditched the tweeter trim....
Ditto for the other front side.
Now onto the rear.
I PM'ed "WV_FJ" last night and asked him about the polk 4" mounting. THANKS WV_FJ!!!!!!!!
He told me he used spacers in the rear to bring them out from the mounting surface. I went to my local OSH and found some plastic spacers...1" which I cut down to fit the exact depth required to accomadate the 4" speakers without the magnets hitting in the back. With the panels OFF, Its really simple. But I was worried the stock trim would not fit. My spacers ended up around .66", maybe .70". I got 1" spacers, and cut them about 3/4" length.
I started with the stock speaker mounting setup, and marked the metal for centerpoints, top and side.
Then I removed the stock mount, and lined up the new holes for the 4" speaker.
Pre drilled the holes, and got all 4 screws installed....THEN measured the amount I need to "space" them away from the back of the magnet. I made one spacer at a time, took the 1" spacers I bought and cut them down with a cutoff tool. Once all for spacers were made, they were installed.
Now onto the new 5.25" seperates in the rear passenger area...again, measure TWICE, cut once.
Blue painters tape is your friend...cover the work area with tape. Layout the FINAL trim plate, center it up in the opening....and outline it.
Then do the same with the actual speaker itself.
Then cut it out, about 1/4"-1/8" less then the speaker outline. My hole saw was WAAAAAY short, so I had to dremel a lotta plastic to get where I need to be..but once all that was done, it looked like this...
Of course, I struggled with locating the tweeters...but I love what I found....a really sweet spot.
And the Crossover unit for the 5.25" unit as well as the tweets, I found a nice spot behind the panels to mount it..........
So I made a lotta progress today, but tomorrow is all about final product, and looks.
Still have to do the driver's side 5.25" speaker and tweeter install.
Need to pre-wire from amp to new door speakers (again, on back order)
Need to reinstall floor, and cut-out for incoming wiring at amp/power locations.
Need to remove/reinstall exisiting 10" Infinity basslink from my tacoma, and pre-wire that.
Need to run antenna wire, to the rear hinge point, as well as a new circuit to the fuse block to accomadate my Cobra CB., AND an aux 12v outlet.
And to top it all off, I have tickets for TOOL in Oakland at 8pm. Thanks to Reebles, for being my desigated driver!
