Yakima adapters

just installed the adapters on my fj. Everything went ok except i had to grind down 2 of the adapters which were a tad too long. It was about .5mm too long because the center moulding was bulging up even after sliding as far foward against the front adapter.

Storn,

Is this common or a one off issue?

Re: Yakima adapters

It's medium common. They fit fine on two FJ's that I looked at personally, although I did need to reposition the rubber moulding in the roof channels. But for some people, one or two of the parts needed some grinding. I think there can be variability in the size of the rubber moulding and in the paint, which has a bead in the channels

My new batch just came in and it has extra clearance all the way around. If anyone has trouble with an old adaptor I'd be happy to send a replacement.

Here's the new stuff:

and the set:

Ole!

Re: Yakima adapters

Great to hear you were able to tweak the design. Thanks for standing behind your product!

Re: Yakima adapters

So, which Yakima rack system are you using? I have searched on Thule and Yakima's site and neither offer a rack system for the FJ.
Thanks

Thanks for asking...

What I sell are adaptors that fit into the roof rack attachment points on top of the FJ. (Those are those rectangular aluminum things ^^)

You bolt the adaptors to the roof and from there you can build a stock Yakima system on top by bolting the Yakima Landing Pad #1 to the adaptor. These are the Yakima parts you need (in addition to the adaptors) to finish the system...

2 x Landing Pad #1 (Product #8000221) - There are 2 landing pads in a box.
Control Towers (#8000214) - 4 in a box.
58" cross bars (#800409) - 2 in a set.
44" Ferring (#8007048) - This is a must!

Altogether you can build this system for much cheaper than a OEM rack. And its way more funtional and it won't break when you put kayaks on it. Also it is lower profile so you'll be able to install lifts on your car and still fit it in the garage!

Re: Yakima adapters

For the record, my adapters fit fine, I just needed to tap the molding back and forth, no big deal at all. Storn gave you all the part numbers you need. I had the Thule snowboard racks on mine, but they sucked for a number of reasons, so I took them back (gotta love REI) and got the Yakimas which I love and fit like a glove:

I have better angles, but f'ing Gimp is still crashing on Leopard so I can't blur my license plate. It's not that I don't trust you guys, it's the "others".

Re: Yakima adapters

Thanks, Trevor!! You rule for posting those up. I have your pics that you sent me (plus some others) that I've been meaning to put up for a while. I get so flaky during snowboard season... I'm sure you understand! The yakima snowboard racks look great. I have some old Thules that I pulled off my other car but I think I will go with Yakimas eventually too.

Re: Yakima adapters

Surfit gave me these pictures from her installation... "Went in super easy. (chick did it solo)"

She had to wait for some parts so she capped off the landing pads. From here, the yakima crossbars just snap in place. So you guys with lifted trucks... if you want to park it in the garage you can snap the roofracks off in about 90 seconds. Not bad considering that they also perform better than the stock rack.

Boss!!!

Nice job, Surfit! Thanks for the pics!

Re: Yakima adapters

I just ordered the adaptors...and I have a question as to the parts needed from Yakima. A 44" fairing is listed - why not a wider one to better match the roof width of the FJ?

Does the longer fairing flop around too much?

Is the 44" one as effective as a longer one?

The adaptors should arrive today, so I want to swing by REI on the way home to get the Yakima parts....

Thanks!
