Here is the most comprehensive list of suspension options for FJ Cruisers out there! Prices and options are always changing so I will try to update it as often as possible.

Last Updated: 2/19/2023

To help understand the comparison a little more and what type of lift kit or suspension components are actually offered from each company, where it says "Type" refers to the type of lift it is or components offered. But the basic types of lift kits include the following:

  • Spacer Lift/Leveling Kit: These lifts achieve simple lift or leveled stance by placing "spacers" above the factory coils and strut assembly. They have the potential to damage factory suspension components including shocks, ball joints, etc. Not recommended for off-roading but good if you are just looking for the lifted "look."
  • Full Non-adjustable Suspension: These kits actually replace the factory suspension components with lifted parts to allow for a lifted stance. However they are not able to have their height adjusted to compensate for added weight from bumpers or other accessories.
  • Full Adjustable Suspension: These kits also replace factory suspension components with lifted parts to allow for a higher stance. And they have adjust-ability built in to their design. Some front coilovers are threaded and allow for more fine tuning of the height while other designs have several notches that are set distances apart and allow for the lift to be adjusted in that way.
  • Long Travel Kits: These kits require a bit more work, welding, and fabrication to install and often require more parts than are included in the kit, but widen the stance of the FJ by usually 2" on each side or even 3.5" depending on the kit (at least for the front). (Do not confuse the +2" and +3.5" of long travel kits with height, those numbers refer to the added width from the longer control arms. These kits all pretty much fall under the classification of a 3" lift.) Some rear long travel kits are available out there and just increase the amount of flex or wheel travel in the rear axle, but these do not affect the width of the stance.
  • Body Lift Kits: These kits range in height but have nothing to do with the suspension of the vehicle, and rather add a spacer puck between the frame and body of the FJ to raise the body of the FJ. While this does add some height and clearance in some areas like wheel wells, the frame is still the same distance from the ground and so are any components bolted to it like rock sliders and bumpers. Body lifts produce a noticeable gap in some areas of the FJ, between the grille and bumper for example.
  • Solid Axle Swap: For those really looking to change their FJ's off-roading capabilities forever, a solid axle swap (SAS) is where you may look. They require cutting out all the original independent front suspension components and custom fabricating the setup with an aftermarket front axle complete with steering parts, drive-lines, linkages, and more.
- Other notes: There are a lot of numbers when it comes to FJ Cruiser lifts, but generally you have 3" suspension lifts and 6" suspension lifts. These numbers range a little from manufacturer to manufacturer, especially when it comes to the front and rear (like 2.5" front lift and 1.5" rear lift), but in general those are the 2 kinds of lifts out there when it comes to height. Some people add a 1" body lift and 3" suspension lift to get a "4 inch lift" but in reality they only have a 3" lift. Shocks can come in a variety of diameters too, with some brands measuring the diameter in millimeters while others use inches. So be careful when looking at 2" or 2.5" shocks, as sometimes this refers to the diameter, not the lift achieved from the part.

Generally here on the forum, folks like to run 3" lifts with 285 or 33" tires. It is the ultimate combo for the FJ though you can of course go with larger or smaller tires or more or less lift. Companies like Old Man Emu or Bilstein 5100s are the "go-to" for achieving a quality lift, but the original OME lifts have no adjustibility and the Bilstein 5100 lift has limited adjustibility. (Meaning if you installed the lift, and the front of your FJ was sitting a little too high, there would be no way of "fine tuning" the lift to get it level.) But for a little more money, there are many brands or options for lift kits with adjustable coilovers that can be purchased and those really allow the user the ability to get their ride height right where they would like it, with some of the more popular options being ToyTec, Icon, Fox, or King. There are 6" lifts out there but they do tend to raise the FJ's center of gravity a bit making it more tippy and while they increase the FJ's approach, descent, and break-over angles, you don't gain too much ground clearance. The really limiting factor in clearance height is the size of the tires which raises the lowest parts of the FJ (the rear shock mounts, rear differential, and ends of the lower control arms) further off the ground.

Terms:
UCA - Upper Control Arm or upper a-arm
Coilovers - The combination of the front coils and shocks together an a complete assembly where the coils surround or go "over" the shocks.
Adjustable coilovers - Coilover assemblies that have a threaded section and have a plate resting against the coils which can twist up or down the threads in order to compress or loosen the coil and thus provide more or less lift. Some other coilovers may have notches along the shock into which a snap ring can sit in and then the plate that holds the coil is held in place by that snap ring. The lift height is determined by the height at which the plate is mounted on the shock.
Extended Travel - Some coilovers like those from Icon are offered in an extended travel version which isn't to be confused with long travel. These have another half inch or so of range of movement and should be used only with aftermarket upper control arms so factory ball joints aren't damaged from over-extention.
Shocks - The part of the suspension like a piston that provides the dampening and resistance control of the suspension.
Coils/Springs - The coiled metal that actually provides the "lift" and is responsible for the height of the vehicle.

Front Suspension Details: All-Pro offers several front suspension items including their popular long travel kit which includes both upper and lower control arms made from 4130 chromoly tubing which add +2” of track width per side, extended brake lines, heavy-duty spindle gussets which require welding, and tie rod extensions. The kit requires long travel coilovers, and All-Pro offers some from different companies. Other kit options which are suggested or are required include their heavy-duty steering kit, chromoly extended axle shafts, and Wheeler's SuperBump bumpstops. Many other parts are offered from All-Pro, including parts for those without long travel, like their popular stock length 4130 Chromoly Upper Control which have a 1.25” uni-balls and zerk fittings for easy lubrication.

Rear Suspension Details: All-Pro’s offers their AntiRock sway bar kit, which requires some welding and minor trimming but no longer offer their own real links.

Solid Axle Swap: All Pro offers many of the components required for a solid axle replacement if you wish to say goodbye to your independent front suspension. Except for the actual axle, they have most of the parts necessary to do the swap, but obviously labor costs would be extensive and much welding, trimming, and cutting would be necessary.

____

Bilstein

Type: Full Adjustable Suspension Kits

Pictures:

1144321

Details: While Bilstein is the producer of high quality shocks and coils they do not advertise their suspension in "kit" form or even as individual products for purchase on their websites. The only way to obtain Bilstein shocks or a Bilstein lift is through dealers such as ToyTec, PureFJCruiser, etc. Sonoran Steel Fabrication for example uses Bilstein shocks and coils in their lift package, as do some lifts offered by ToyTec, and others can surely be listed. Some of the products offered through dealers will already be pre-assembled, but other times they come in pieces where assembly is required and sometimes disassembly of the factory struts is done in order to reuse the factory coils.

The most popular shock by Bilstein used on FJ Cruisers for lifted applications is their 5100 Series shock, which has adjustability for the front suspension depending on how you mount the coil with the notched mounting plate (most using the "3rd notch" to achieve a 3" lift). More recently though some have started using Bilstein's newer, larger 6112 Series and 5160 Series shocks for increased performance. The 6112 has a larger diameter and therefore increasing dampening power and would be used on the front suspension. The 6112s are also height adjustable like the 5100s. And the 5160s are for rear suspension applications and feature an external reservoir for keeping the internal gasses/oils cooler. Bilstein's newest addition to the lineup is their B8 8112 (ZoneControl® CR) shocks. For the front suspension the B8 8112 coilovers do have adjustability between 0.6 - 2.5" in a thread-like fashion vs the retainer clips and notches used on other Bilstein shocks and they are larger in diameter and include a 60 mm remote reservoir. Then for the rear they have the B8 8100 bypass shocks which feature incremental flow adjusters that allow infinite changes in damping force for precise compression and rebound control and also include a remote reservoir. The website also states that new rear springs are available for 1″ lift, 1.5″ lift and 1.5″ Heavy Load with 400-lb. constant weight.

The following PDF from Bilstein's website could be of great use to whoever wants to learn more about their suspension: http://cart.bilsteinus.com/pdfs/off-road.pdf

Another noteworthy thing to add is that Bilstein suspension comes on FJ Cruisers from the factory. The special edition FJ Cruisers even feature specifically tuned Bilsteins for more off-road based applications. The 2007 TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser featured TRD Bilstein "off-road tuned" shocks, giving them an edge over the base model FJs. And the 2008 & 2010-2013 Trail Teams Special Edition FJ Cruisers have "trail-tuned" Bilsteins which are often referred to as "TT Bilsteins," the "TT" either standing for Trail Teams or trail-tuned. The 2014 Trail Teams Ultimate Edition FJ Cruiser however got an extra special treatment from TRD and Bilstein. It received "TRD-tuned" Bilstein shocks in the front and rear, specifically with the 5160 Series in the rear complete with the external reservoirs and with special, red TRD coils in the front which added additional height as to allow the TTUE to have a leveled stance. These TRD/TTSE/TTUE shocks are available for purchase from suppliers online.

Total Chaos Fabrication

Type: Upper Control Arms, Lower Control Arms, Long Travel Kits, and Other Suspension Components

Price:
Long Travel +2" Kits: $3,184 - $5,986
Long Travel +3.5" Kits: $3,543 - $6,194
Upper Control Arms: $834 - $1,094
Lower Control Arms: $1,944 - $2,299

Pictures:

Long Travel Kit Details: Total Chaos offers several different long travel kits along with other suspension parts. They offer both +2" and +3.5" long travel kits, and those numbers are how much wider the kit makes your track width on each side. So the +2" kit makes your FJ's total track width 4" wider and the +3.5" kit makes it 7" wider. These bolt on systems are intended to install a pair of 8” travel, 2.5” diameter coilovers from Fox, King, Icon, etc. that bolt into the factory coil bucket locations. This kit cannot be installed with normal 3” lift coil over shocks. Their UCAs are made from 4130 chromoly. To run the Total Chaos LT kits, one must also install extended length axles to retain 4WD. Their LT lower control arms can come with extra tabs for dual shock compatibility. Also, Total Chaos upper control arms are available with an optional 3/4" chromoly lined heim joints for the pivots. They offer the kits in a +2" Standard Series, +3.5" Standard Series, +2" Expedition Series, and +3.5" Race Series. The Standard kits having lower control arms constructed in the original design while the Race Series had upgraded components and the Expedition Series is even more upgraded/updated so less custom fabrication is required. These kits can also be purchased from Total Chaos with King front coilovers included.

Other Details: Total Chaos also offers a range of stock length upper and lower control arms. Their stock length uni-ball UCAs are designed for your standard 2.5"-3" lifts and offer and additional inch of travel when used with extended length coil over shocks. They also offer UCAs with 3/4" chromoly heim joints for the pivots and note that these were specifically designed for use with 6" lift kits. They also offer bolt-on rear bump stop kits designed to work with King or Fox 2.0" diameter bump stops. Other suspension components such as weld on spindle gussets are designed to add strength to the stock spindle, and they offer a complete spindle that adds 3.5" of lift for 2WD models, but that can only be used with Total Chaos' balljoint or uniball lower control arms. They also have full sets of chromoly adjustable rear links, aluminum skid plates for factory and TC lower control arms, and complete bushing kits available in different materials such as urethane and nylatron.

Other products from Total Chaos includes their line of stock length lower control arms. Currently they offer their standard uniball type LCA with an integrated 1/4" thick steel skid plate and their new Expedition Series LCAs with built in steering stop tabs and larger pockets for bigger shocks. All of the designs they offer have dual shock compatibility or a dual shock variation and the boxed lowers have an integrated uniball joint and offer more ground clearance. Total Chaos used to have a Race Series Chromoly Boxed LCA but those were phased out by the new, superior Expedition Series arms. Total Chaos also has dual shock hoops which require bolting and a small amount of welding and work for their stock length control arms or long travel arms.

Notes: A maximum tire size of either 285/75R16 or 285/70R17 is recommended. With +2" kit, fiberglass fenders are not needed but with +3.5" kit, they are required.

Disclaimer: Long-travel set-ups typically cost almost double the cost of the kit itself once all the extra components ( long travel coil overs, extended axles, etc.) are purchased and fabrication is completed (welding on of spindle gussets, limiting straps, body mount chops, bump stops, etc.) Installation will also add to the cost which could easily be an additional $500-1500 depending on work completed, gusseting, and replacement of parts as found worn.

Price:
Long Travel Kits: $3,184 - $4,135
Upper Control Arms: $795 - $1,042
Lower Control Arms: $1,852 - $2,190

Pictures:

Long Travel Details: Total Chaos offers several different long travel kits along with other suspension parts. They offer both +2" and +3.5" long travel kits, and those numbers are how much wider the kit makes your track width on each side. So the +2" kit makes your FJ's total track width 4" wider and the +3.5" kit makes it 7" wider. These bolt on systems are intended to install a pair of 8” travel, 2.5” diameter coilovers from Sway-A-Way, Fox, King, or Icon that bolt into the factory coil bucket locations. This kit cannot be installed with standard 3” lift coil over shocks. Their UCAs are made from 4130 chromoly. To run the Total Chaos LT kits, running their extended axles to retain 4WD is necessary. Their LT lower control arms are already tabbed for dual shock compatibility. Also, Total Chaos upper control arms are available with an optional 3/4" chromoly lined heim joints for the pivots. They offer the kits in a +2" Standard, +3.5" Standard, +3.5" Race Series, and +2" Expedition Series. The Standard kits having lower control arms constructed in the original design while the Race Series had upgraded components and the Expedition Series is even more upgraded/updated so less custom fabrication is required.

Great thread and covers all of the major learning. The bit about Bilstein tracks what I learned by trial and error. I have the 5100's and they require a good spring. The factory springs on the top setting are really harsh. Eibach springs on the second setting work but they are a little stiff. After talking with Bilstein they recommended that I upgrade to 6112's and matched springs or refit the 5100's with the matched 3" lift springs on the lowest setting. The issue with 5100's and spring options is an old one. Now Toytec offers a true 3" option with the matched springs on the lowest setting for greater travel and a better ride. I will be testing this:

All of those top plate bolt on spacer lifts should have a disclaimer next to them, stating "this product lengthens your front shock beyond the reach of the front bump stop, blown out front shocks will occur with common off road use, shock stems may fail in extreme situations, upper control arm ball joints will contact springs in extreme situations. Torn CV boots or broken CV joints may occur if used in conjunction with after market front upper control arms."

I just wanted to quote jtm here and second what he states. All the lift here that use a spacer to achieve lift are almost a recipe for disaster.

If you are planing on doing more advanced off-roading, then a spacer lift should be the last thing you'd ever consider. I am personally running the ReadyLIFT 3" lift kit which uses spacers over the front stock coilover and above the rear springs to get its lift and it really does mess things up for off-roading.

A few months ago I replaced my UCAs with Light Racing ones and what I noticed was that the stock ball joint boots had both torn from being over worked and over extended. I figured since they were stock that they wouldn't be as good as the ball joints on my new Light Racing UCAs and that this would never be a problem though.

However, within less than a month of wheeling with the Light Racing UCAs, I again had torn both boots and it was because the UCA was dropping down to the point of hitting the spring, and that causes extra wear on the boot and plus it probably got over extended. I was able to order new boots so there wouldn't be an open tear for dirt and contaminates it get into the ball joint but it still could happen again.

So I strongly advise that for people who plan on doing more extreme wheeling, going with any lift besides a spacer is what you really should do. Probably one of the most affordable options that is still high quality would be to go with Bilstein 5100s or an Old Man Emu lift.

Also, jtm had stated how CV boots can tear with spacers but I personally have not had this happen (yet) and I believe it is because my kit came with a front differential drop. Most of those spacer kits like the Rough Country 3" for example do not have this but others like the ones from Low Range Offroad and ReadyLIFT do and it basically lowers your differential down about an inch or so so that your CV boot angles aren't as extreme and wont be as likely to tear under articulated situations.

So I hope this helps anyone trying to make a decision about lifts.

To those who read this thread,

If there are any lifts out there that I forgot or that you would like me to add, I would be more than happy to make revisions to the list. And if there is incorrect information or just info that you think i should add, feel free to let me know. Already LT. the Metal Tech supporting vendor and site sponsor messaged me requesting that I add their rear long travel kit so I made sure to make a nice, big section for Metal Tech since even though there were links to their site for where you can buy certain lifts, I completely forgot about them as a vendor who sold their own kits!

So if any other vendors out there want anything added, PM me and I'll be right on it.

Hope you enjoy the thread and that the information is helpful!!! :bigthumb:

The best and worst are all opinions and personal preferences. It depends on how you wheel, how much you wheel, where you where, etc etc etc. I could tell you one thing, someone else will tell you another. One suspension is designed for the desert while another is just to provide you with a more comfortable ride and a small lift.

There is no way to describe which is best and which ones are ok. A full suspension system will be better than a spacer lift in every way, but it will cost you. Some manufactures make great products, and some make ok products. We all have our opinions on those though, and if we started giving our opinions on suspension systems and manufactures there would be an argument and people would get their feelings hurt.

The best way to decide what is best for you and what is best, is for you to do some research, then some more and then even more.

Looks awesome- Great job!!! :bigthumb:

One issue- the Rancho link is the Camburg link.

#19 ·
Nice summary. One comment is that the pricing on the LT kits is a bit deceiving since they don't include shocks or coils (which is really what the left thread is about). I know you have a note on TC about that, but perhaps it sould list out kit price + cost of 2 shocks to make it clear you'll be spending a bit more than is listed there? Doesn't account for the need for bumps & longer axles, etc. when it comes to the LT kit. Price can easily double what is listed on both TC and Camburgs listings there which is the only reason I mention it.

#20 ·
Thanks all for your positive comments! :bigthumb:

So you're saying that I should include the price for the LT kits along with the price of the coil-overs required? So this would apply to companies like Total Choas, Camburg, and All Pro?

Looks awesome- Great job!!! :bigthumb:

One issue- the Rancho link is the Camburg link.

dude epic thread, i know its not a true lift but a few people have leveled their FJ with the bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks and i personally have used them in the front with my ome coils. just a thought

I did a long post about this yesterday, but I don't know what happen to it. maybe I didn't click send. Anyhow

Thanks for putting this together
It seems this has been sorely needed for a long time
So we can keep this thread open for discussing, adding and tweaking the information, then we could start another thread with just all the updated information without conversation. Then it could be closed, but opened back up to edit anything new. I didn't read through all of the replies here so if this has been thought of, sorry. I just wanted to continue my thought from yesterday, before I went to the garage
Again great job. looks like this could be a trend for many other comparisons:bigthumb:

I don't know if it is possible but what would be real nice would be to have the travel measurements included. Up and down, claimed and actual.

#28 ·
For the companies that stated what the travel is for their kits, I made sure to provide the measurements, usually it's in the details or notes of the lifts.

#30 ·
Very good job, I didn't realize there were that many vendors offering kits for our FJs.

You may want to consider adding that both Icon and Radflo offer front and rear suspension to complement the various 6" lifts.

Also, Icon has recently standardized a "low speed valving change" that is a free-of-charge option on their coilovers that provides a softer ride than their normal tune. I am running these in the front and really like the way they ride.

Thanks
Shawn
