I'm going crazy! It is happening mostly when I turn, doesn't matter witch way, but happens more on left turns. It almost sounds like tires chirping, but more metallic. Info on the rig is Toytec bilstien lift from Jan, and new LCAs (siezed old ones) from about a month ago. I am not a guy who can take my truck apart sadly. I can get a small sqeak when jumping on my sliders. It's coming from the front for sure though. Any pics of where I could spray oil would be great. I had the shop grease a bit, but I think it was must LCA parts.
Stock UCAs, hoping to change that this summer, and stock skids. The one thing I found when I dropped the skid was two silver spacers. I'll take a pic when I get home. Any idea what those are?
So sounds like what's changed recently are the LCA's. I would start there. I had a squeaky UCA and a front coil over that squeaked for months. Drove me nuts.
I would loosen and then tighten all the skids you have. I had a squeak and it turned out to be my skids.
You don't have the full set so it may not be the same.... but it sure is the cheapest thing to check first
G'day Matt,
as above.
but ... first are they clean ? ...if not then clean them as well....
stock UCA's are not really serviceable, and should not squeal.... but you can squirt the bushes with a bit of WD40 and the ball joint....
after they are clean...
remove skids / clean them.... tighten them up...
did the squeak start after you painted your bling plate .. front skid ? or was it happening before your art work ?
Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll get a pic of those spacers... Maybe someone will know what they are. It was happening before, but seem like it might have gotten worse after the painting. Not sure though. I'll look for rub marks on the skids. Is wd40 the best grease? I have synthetic vehicle grease in the garage as well.
G'day Matt,
WD40 is a aerosol spray on lube ..not really a grease.... but a good light weight lube...
skids could have a stone or dirt in them and they can flex abit, making the squeak.... especially if loose.
check all bolts are tight, on your sway bar, etc....could even be a stone in your brakes ...
you can also spray the lower bushes on your LCA's....
are the toytec coils clean ? they can rub n squeak a bit too .....
all points to start ..... hope its an easy one to eradicate ....
Cheers
Baz
G'day,
some folks have also had success using anti seize spray if you dont have WD40 ...
or as a cyclist ..try some DryFlo lube .... you should have some of that in your kit ?
Thanks Baz! I'll try all of them. Would a stone in the brakes only squeak on turns, and would it make noise when rocking the fj side to side? I had my pads n rotors replaced in Jan as well.
I have lube for my bikes, I'll check what kinds.
Should I tighten skid bolts as tight as I can? If anyone has pics of the exact places you are talking about tht would be a huge help! I know what most things are called.
I happen to be at the gym at the moment, but can try to do as much of this as I can tonight.
Thanks!
I think mine was the LCA skids (I checked them all)... it got so loud that if I was turning slowly in a parkade or some similar place and someone was walking by... they would jump away and look at me when it squawked/squeaked/creaked.
Pretty embarrassing...
G'day Matt,
I would not use Silicone grease/lube...
Stone in the brakes probably isn't the squeak...
Got any TriFlo?
No idea on the spacers....
Clean your coils too....
Hahaha
Cheers
Baz

So I doused everything in WD40, looks like the sqeak is gone, but now I have a click when going over any bump.
My coils are clean.
I am talking with a tech at the dealership. He said the spacers are for I between the skid and the frame. I just asked him if I have them for some special reason. My skid is bent so I can't tighten one bolt fully, but I got the other three super tight.
I will be out of town almost the whole day, so I can't put it to a real test just yet.
Thanks for all the help. I'll go buy some synthetic grease to replace the WD40.
Sadly I am taking a bus instead of driving. Before leaving home, I loosened the skid plate jut in case it is rubbing on the front diff. I will put the spacers on tonight, and hopefully all the squeaks will be gone!
G'day MAtt,
Glad you got the squeak sorted.... one down ....
the click could be your skid flexing, and pinging as it moves, one looser bolt would do that...... can you straighten out your skid ?
it could also be something binding, and releasing .... or something contacting / hitting ... like your sway bar, etc..... hard to pin point.... any wear marks showing ?
could even be in the rear..... noises can be funny, and sound like they are in one spot...but really in another.....
does it click when turning as well as over a bump ?
Cheers
Baz

Okay, going up bumps sideways that rock the rig side to side still makes it sqeak a lot. I can't stand it! It might be the rear end as well. What could be making noise back there? Would the UCAs make noise on movement like that?
G'Day Matt,
Its hard to diagnose from Sydney ...
ITs really a process of elimination.
It could be any number of things.....
is it a binding click, a clunk, a clank, ping.... etc....
As Mikey said, get under it, and have a friend rock it, till you can narrow down the area and sound (s) ....
you need to pin point it, not identify a general area.... too many possibilities ....
the list is almost endless of maybe's ...
LCA's binding / popping
Swaybar clunking / hitting
Coil overs binding / ping
skids clacking
etc....
rear lowers binding
rear coils pinging/popping
rear sway bar binding / hitting
upper rear links binding / hitting
CV's binding
tie rods out / hitting etc....
front diff drop loose ...
rear diff out of alignment .... causing any of the above
these are places to start, it will be the last place you look / adjust ...
Times when I wish you had a private plane.. Anyways, I can't stick my head in the wheel well when he rocks it, but it's coming from the UCA area, or from behind the wheel. The Toytec suspension is really soft, so I can't really lie underneath either. I'll ask the tech who did the lift if I have a swayback relocation... It is really a squeak, not a popping or clunk or anything. Sounds like metal on metal.
Anyways, I'll live with it and see if they will try to diagnose the squeak for free.. It is worse than before the new UCAs and lift, so they might...
G'Day Matt,
LOL... my private jet is in for service at the moment....
but if its a squeak, around the UCA's ..... i would check the ball joint, did you clean and lube this when you did bushes ?
Uniballs do squeak, clean and TriFlo lube them, don't grease them.... or use WD40 / anti seize ....
What UCA's did you get ?
Cheers
Baz

G'day MAtt,
Just has a thought...
how much lift you got on the CO's ?
have you maxed them ?
if so you might be topping them out, with no up travel - hit a bump and you are smacking the top ...effectively driving the shaft past its upper safe limit......
if they are fully cranked down for max lift ..try reducing the load and lift by an inch....
if you are worried about rake, that is a separate issue, that can be addressed separately....
Cheers

I have the stock UCAs. I got stuck replacing my LCAs because they were seized. I was told that they are not set quite at the max, but I can ask again...
The tech might want to kill me with all the questions.lol. He said his 4runner squeaks, but only offroad.
