To lift or not to lift?????

I'm debating whether to lift my FJ or not. I have found a local Toyota dealer who installs Revtek lifts. However they also advise me that customers who have installed 285/70/17's, are having issue with rubbing. Revtek sites states "Fits tires up to 285/75/R16". I am presently running 265/70/17's, so is it really worth it? Could I run 275/70/17's as is, with no lift? I don't really wanna lift it to much..lol...my kids have a hard enough time now getting in and out....but I would like to get a little wider / taller tire underneath. I've read some articles about the FJ, and lifting it would defeat some of the designs and its abilities in off roading.....thats of course if your using a spacer lift...which I would be since I don't wanna void factory warranty. Any suggestion????? Thank you

How I would like for my FJ to sit is the first attachment below.(not sure who's this one belongs to)
My FJ as is, is the second attachment.

Mods so far:
Rocker rails

Boston S35 front speakers
Boston GT50 AMP
Boston GL2 10 woofer
Audiovox media headrest

Garmin nuvi GPS

Mods debating on:
Revtek 3 in spacer lift - 285/70/17 BFG's
2 Hella off road lights front
2 Hella lights for rear (camping and boating)

LIFT IT DAMN YOU!
Now, that Im calmed down...
I wouldnt go with any of the spacer lifts out there as they really dont do anything for you or your FJ. Many of us are very satisfied with our OME's.

Re: To lift or not to lift?????

IMO, I've been wheeling stock for a while now and I'm having a real hard time justifying myself getting a lift. If you don't need to lift it, then don't.

Now, your questions....rubbing, most could be solved by chopping and redoing the body mount. Some tires will rub the wheel well (mostly MT's) at full artriculation. Do you off road much? Warranty...if your dealer is doing it, they will/should warranty it.

You have to be truthful with yourself and why you are considering a lift? Are you doing this strictly for vehicle appearance, desire for higher clearance (tires are the only way to raise differentials and axles, while lift will raise everything else), or a combination of both?

Larger tires with more aggressive tread will impact fuel economy and ride comfort. If this is your daily driver, weigh the consequences before modification.

I wanted a more aggressive tread than the stock pavement tires, so my path was to purchase Bridgestone Dueller Revos (265/75R16) and 16" wheels (TRD alloys). This selection allowed me to retain the same tire diameter as the stockers (speedometer/odometer are not impacted), but a taller tire sidewall. The ride is very comfortable and I like the look of my baby's new shoes.

Furthermore, I know that the 9.6 inch factory clearance will be adequate for my off-road adventures. I'm the kind of person that believes skid plates, sliders, and other armor is for protection insurance in case of a misjudgment of height of obstacle; and that in an ideal wheeling situation the armor never gets scratched. Mi dos pesos.

Re: To lift or not to lift?????

IMHO The only reason to get a lift is to fit bigger tires. The only reason to fit bigger tires is for more clearance on the diff and other underbody parts. Are you satisfied with the FJ as is? Mine is stock height, took it on trails that other lifted FJ's went on. My TRD skid plate probably has more dings in it than the others but it did fine. I may lift in the future, but for now, it is fine for me.

Re: To lift or not to lift?????

Another reason to lift is if you are going with an aftermarket bumper and winch.

If you do not lift it, you will be singin' the saggin' blues, and nose diving when stopping.

I am going with the OME with 886 coils up front, and the 895s back aft.

Re: To lift or not to lift?????

Agree with all the posts here thus far, also would add to check the trails you're planning on running and chat with folks that do them. In my case we live right on the Canadian sheild, all the trails are strewn with huge bolders and rocks and have very tight clearances, there's often now way around. After riding around with a some folks here it became very obvious that a lift is a good thing, unless you like slamming your diff in the rocks every 10 minutes, so aside from looks and being able to stuff huge tires under your rig, the trails you ride should also be considered.

Re: To lift or not to lift?????

Basically, if you are going to do any "mods" then a lift will help accentuate them. While the FJC is a VERY capable rig stock it is common for many to slowly upgrade over time...ie tyres, bumper, etc. It really depends on whats your flavor? For me, it all began with the "squatty" look of the FJ.

I'd be glad to, but I don't own a digital camera. I took a picture using my daughter's camera of my FJ with steel wheel new off the lot, and then had the TRD wheels and tires installed at my local tire store the next day. I will ask her again, but she hasn't down loaded the pictures from camera to computer yet. This is too high tech for me. If she doesn't do this soon, I'll buy my own digital camera and learn how to transfer to a computer. The little spoiled brat will be needing gas money soon, so I think the pictures will be available later this week.
