Re: Anyone notice light rust

We've all noticed some light rust around the welds on the frame. Mine's not too bad though.

Noticed it the first day. Those that live where salt is used on icy roads may have to take a second look come spring.

I will probably treat it like I do the cast iron on my shop tools: steel wool, rub in talcum powder (with a rag, not fingers) (The talc fills the pores of the iron) and coat with carnuba wax. Sounds funny, but works like a charm.

That's normal.

Crawl under any 4x4 and you'll see.

Common on any none coated or scraped spots. Easy fix if you want. Clean and coat. Hundred ways to do that.

Re: Anyone notice light rust

On spots like those, do you have to fix them or are these just cosmetic issues? Like my front recovery points have some rust on them, I am guessing from being tied down on the ship from Japan. Won't the rust just remain superficial or can it eat all the way through?

I have a friend who just purhased a jeep and his front suspension is totally coated with rust. The dealer told him that all jeeps are like this and that since the part is cast iron the rust will just remain on the surface and the part is fine.

I was thinking that if a part is thin, like sheet metal or body work then it could be a concern, but on thick pieces like springs or such that it may not be a concern...

Regards,
Alphonse
