Chris,

T- 30 sec to snap:

Mark here from Metal-tech the orange FZJ80 that dead pulled the trail repair.

Even with the fix in place we still needed strap him off the trail back to camp. I will give the owner some props he did bring his FJC to the event on a trailer! (Planed that part right!)

Chris more photos of the Round Up on our web site, got a few of you in the 40 in camp and one of your taco Lone Star Cruiser Roundup ~ 2007

See you at Cruise Moab at the end of the month?
Hey Mark,

Good meeting you in Katemcy. Thanks for helping out with that one, and hanging out with us while CK tried to fix it.

Thanks again for all your support!

More importantly, how are your FJC projects coming along?

Hay Graham, great meeting you at Katemcy! Happy to help out, not shure he would have got out under his own power. We used the strap on a number of spots, he did good on some others I thought would need it.

FJC projects are comming along slowly, I hope to have the truck at Cruise Moab at the end of the month we will see!

Mark

Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

Damn now I'm having second thought about going wheeling and acting stupid on the trails. I try to always think safety. and I always check myself and think if my FJC can handle it....

Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

Great post...I've always known the basics (#1-take it slow & cool...#2 don't over-tourque ANYTHING , either with a wrench or the drive-train with the accelerator pedal, especially when the steering wheel's not pointing straight ahead)!

But for a guy with a fairly stock TRD and not enough experience to change a CV joint in the "field", ya reckon my weekend-wheelings are cool with BASIC tools, rags, a CB, cell phone, energy bars, water & a .45??!

I've driven everything from Fiats to Jeeps pretty aggresively and never "blew" a CV or U-joint (yet), even when blasting down fire trails in the moutains of SW Virginia! And usually I'm alone or with my girl. I also check things out a lot and at the first sign of trouble, have it taken care of (like popping CV joints, squeeky belts, rumbling bearings, whining gears, etc...)

Is the FJ that fragile, or are you guyz pretty hard core????

Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

Great thread, exspecialy since I'm building up my kit for the Dusy trail later this year.

Would carrying spare inner and outer tie rods be a good part to add to the list? On the FJ are they diffrent parts for right/left, and how much do they run?

Where are people getting the best prices on third party CV's?

I am pretty sure tie rods are identical from left to right. I don't know of any 3rd party CV assemblies yet and I looked pretty hard up until a couple months ago. One remanufacturer told me that the industry is about 4-5 years behind new model release dates. It's been rumored that we have the same CV axles as 4Runners or Tacomas, so you might try that route. I picked up mine from a Toy dealer for about $350.
