Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

Awesome post Valk, thanks for writing that up. I'd give you more rep points, but I can't give you any more.

Just curious again, Valk, but is that beer in the passenger's foot well of the FJ40 part of your "tool" kit ??

Exactly- there are not many tools required that would be considered "exotic", with the axle nut socket being an exception. Parts, fluids, seals and various "shop supplies" also should be carried.
Great post...

It would be a great addition to this post (or start another) to have some PICS of YOUR FJC spare parts and PICS of the TOOL BOX and TOOLS you personally take on the trail with you.

I consider myself an above average wrench-turner with quality tools (built many 350 performance engines and street rods in the 70's and 80's), but I would enjoy to see YOUR SETUP and your MUST-HAVES with your experience and life/trail lessons.

My fear is to forget that ONE TOOL that I need and should have known about, yet didn't put it in the box.

BTW, who was the guy that was RUSHING YOU? Part of the FJ drivers crew or someone responsible to keep the trail open and running?

Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

I've been meaning to put together an axle replacement kit before spring comes. already picked up a 35mm socket, and sourced the axle and seals, but never even thought of the gear oil and FIPG. Thanks for the post!

Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

Really, an outstanding post, Val.

I'm completely new to wheeling (as of December when I got the FJ) and have a lot to learn.

Basic trail repairs are most definitely among the list of "to-learn".

Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

Pardon my ignorance, again and again, but FIPG is what? I'm guessing it's gasket stuff, but I've never heard it referred to with the FIPG acronym. Is the FPIG special stuff ??

Or are we talking about products like this:

Re: Lessons about CV axle failure

Valk... or someone else knowledgeable here...

1. Are all four CV joints the same ?...

2. Are right and left axles the same ?...

3. Do the CV Joints come as one or multipal
part #'s ?...

4. Does someone have a parts list for the axle
replacement ?...

I know, I know, I can and will do the research
myself, but I would not feel 100% on my list
unless it can be collaborated...

Thanks Much...

5. U-Joist for drive shafts, one size, or multipal ?...

The FIPG is only if you need to open something up (diff in this case). You will lose less than a cup of gear oil when you swap a CV, but if a piece of metal goes in the diff (or the C clip breaks) you will have to completely drain the diff and fish out the piece with a magnetic pick-up tool.

Usually there is damage to the diff seal, so I guess your complete list for a CV would encompass:

CV axle
35mm hub socket
Torque wrench
long pry bar (for moving the spindle into place)
another couple of long screwdrivers to pop the axle out
magnetic pick-up
2 spare 'C' clips
gear oil (enough for two fills and a container to recover 2 drains)
2 right & 2 left diff seals (in case you mess one up )
seal puller & a means to seat them
locktite (for the lower BJ bolts)
brake cleaner
rags
FSM for torque specs (or write them/memorize them)
A hacksaw with a handful of spare blades just in case
A good headlamp just in case...

It is important to understand that the outer stub part of the CV is what retains the bearing, so if there is a catastrophic failure that prevents easily swapping the axle, the stub needs to be in there to support the bearing or you will compound your problems quickly.

Of course, always let someone know where you are going and how long it should take, broadcast that you are bing held up (even if no one replies) and monitor your radio.

1. No- the inner joint is a tulip, the outer joint is a birfield.
2. Yes, the left and right axles are the same, but the seals are not.
3. The CV axle comes as a complete assembly, the joints are part of the axle.
4. I just gave it to you.
5. U-joints are different depending upon where they are located.
