rear diff

I just got a bunch of work done on my rear end of my fj. After driving it for about a hour I decided to take a look at the work they did. The question is while under the fj looking at the work I put my hand on the diff and it was very hot. I’m not sure if the diff should run hot or just worm

First thing to inspect is pull the fill plug and check the oil level. Level too low (or sometimes too high, but usually seals are threatened first) can result in hot to touch housings.

If oil level is okay, they tell us what service was performed on the rear diff. Did it involve disassembly and reassembly? Details.

If you had new ring and pinion gears installed, they should have told you a break in procedure to not overheat it.

I just had a ring gear failure and they put in a whole new carrier. (third member)
