What exactly are coilovers?

I just bought a Yellow FJ lifted with the ProComp stage I lift I believe. How do I know if it's the I or II? If it's the I can I finish it off with coilovers? Why do I need coilovers? Thanks guys.

Re: What exactly are coilovers?

i saw it sitting there for a while. my girl used to work there so i would see it whenever i would come over to visit her.

it looks good, but that lift is more for looks than it is functionality. but you will see a great improvement in ride quality and offroad capability with the full coilovers designed for that set up.

Re: What exactly are coilovers?

Coilover is just a descriptive term for the way the front suspension is setup. The spring "coil" is around "over" the shock. This is different from the back where the spring and the shock are completely separate. So the front setup is referred to as a coilover setup. When people say they are getting a coilover suspension, they mean that they are buying the spring and shock as a unit. See Donahoe Racing, Camburg, Sway-A-Way, etc. As opposed to just replacing the shocks with Bilsteins for example or the springs with OME.

That's pretty much right. What I would add is that even the OME's, for example, are coilovers, as they are a coil, over a shock. The other brands you listed are ADJUSTABLE coilovers. But, technically, they are all coilovers. Funny, even the stock suspension is a coilover system.

Re: What exactly are coilovers?

Ok I got it. I wanted to upgrade to the coil overs for my ProComp stage I kit but the upgrade kit is almost as much as the damn stage II kit is. The Stage I was installed by the dealership so I didn't realize there was a difference. Oh well live and learn. I don't believe I can use another companie's coil over kits with the procomp. AllPro said they didn't know.

so you would say that pro-comps lift is more for looks than functionality? what about RC's 6"...i wanted a lift for mine that didn't use spacers (i.e. most 3 inch lifts) then going to coil overs like DR and the like tend to be super expensive, so much so, that getting the bigger lift seems more sensible...i'd like something that looks good and performs well...what are your thoughts?
