I had an interesting front end clunk. In a hard stop I would get a metallic clunk and then when I accelerated away from that stop I would get the clunk again.
To investigate (do a tire rotation and adjust the parking brake) I pulled all 4 tires and started checking the torque on ALL the suspension bolts. Here is what I found;
1 - The front lower shock mount was a little loose.
2 - The lower A-Arm pivot bolts where WAY under torqued. At least 1 full turn on the nut or more (I did not count). I took them up to 100 foot pounds.
3 - The torque on all other bolts where fine.
4 - The rear shock lower bolts were under torqued.
I do have the coils clocked correctly.
I then took the FJ for a test drive and tried a number of hard stop combined with hard acceleration and now the clunk seems to be gone.
It seems that what may have been happening was the lower A-arm was shifting back when stopping and forward when accelerating. I now know to check the torque on the bolts after I have any other person touch the front end.
