Ride Quality...OME vs. Spacer Lifts

I am getting a lift but need some advice from both OME users and Spacer Lift users.

Has anyone tried both? I want my ride to be as close to the stock ride as possible. I have heard from some Daystar users that the ride is comperable to stock. I have heard that some OME users complain that the ride is too stiff. I would imagine that the "heavy" OME's would be stiff. But what about the "light" OME's (883?)

I dont offroad much. I am doing this mostly for looks and to fit 285's.

Thanks

Re: Ride Quality...OME vs. Spacer Lifts

hmm, well..

i have the spacer up front (rough country type alum.). the front still is very much like stock, if not exactly the same

in the rear, i have the OME medium springs and shocks. the rear end rides real good. much better than stock. feels much more controlled IMO.

Re: Ride Quality...OME vs. Spacer Lifts

I have the same spacer kit up front as does DominicG. My rear end use to be OME Med's. But I ditched them after 2000 miles for being to stiff for my liking and went back to stock for a little while and then opted for the toytec springs with the Donahoe Signature Shocks. Still stiff but at least I don't feel like I am ridding in the back of a Mini Cooper anymore. The front end feels just like stock. A little soft for me.

Re: Ride Quality...OME vs. Spacer Lifts

I have OME 885/895s, and they are stiff. But the trick is you need to have weight up front for these springs on the Heavys(886s). 885s are meant for like up to 150lbs up front, the 886s are good for about 200+lbs. The same goes in the rear, you either have a rear bumper, or you tow a lot. I towed a fully loaded 16ft traier a few months ago and there was hardly any sag at all and a smooth ride.

I am looking to add a bumper soon and possibly a winch, but my springs won't handle it without sag, which I don't want. So I might swap out for the 886s.

Re: Ride Quality...OME vs. Spacer Lifts

my plan is to go ome heavies in all four corners, even though I don't have a front or rear offroad bumper yet. plus as I slowly start to add more weight (gear) later, at least I've gotten large portion of the mods done. don't forget the underside full skids too. everything is too weighty

I too will sacrifice a soft ride for future heavier mods. Heavy OME's up front mediums in the back.

Spacers will have the least affect on ride quality, as the original springs / shocks remain on the vehicle. They are stressed more, however, so they will fatigue faster. And with a higher center of gravity, and (presumably) larger/heavier tires/wheels, the spacers do nothing to help control the additional weight in cornering / control situations.

Replacement springs / coilovers tend to give a firmer, more controlled ride, as that is their primary purpose. Handling should improve (mine sure did), with less sway, nose dive, or lift off, and their higher spring rates and better valved shocks can deal with additional load / weight better than OEM suspension and spacers.

The decision really comes down to how you plan on using the vehicle, and the budget you are willing to invest in it to get it set up for your usage.

Re: Ride Quality...OME vs. Spacer Lifts

I have the Daystar kit. I've had it for 5000 miles. The only noticable ride difference is that my front end no longer bottoms out while pulling into a driveway and I don't get the nose dive anymore under breaking conditions. It handles great on the road and off the road. I've had it fully articulated and no issues. $250 installed for the kit. No problems at all.

Re: Ride Quality...OME vs. Spacer Lifts

My wife LOVES the ride that mine FJ has with
the walker evans adjustables... The stock
springs seem stiffer to me, or it may just be
the adjustable part of the walker evans' ones...

So, I was wondering if OME makes a spring that
has a softer rate than the stockers up front
that I could use on my Wifes' FJ?...
