i kind of explained that wrong last time..............

that is the same part i already have there is are two seals one on the inside (90316A0001SEAL, TYPE D OIL) that seals the axle to the knuckle and one on the outside that seals the bearring housing to the knuckle. i need the outside one if it is even another part.

Re: Replacing a broken CV axle (pictures)

great threat
thanks BellyDoc

just what I need now

I am new to this forum and to be hones "front diff leak" brought me here

my story:

-at 42K with 6inch fab tech my front diff seals started leaking (bilaterally)

-obviously my dealer blamed it on the lift and 35's (which I think is a BS) but I did not manage to convince them otherwise (no comment)

-anyhow I am done with dealing with unreasonable services and decided to do it myself .... the thread is printed out ... will review if I have all the tools if not will get them today somewhere

-tomorrow I am picking up the seals from toyota and will start sometime in am ... will let you know how it went

keep your fingers crossed

Re: Replacing a broken CV axle (pictures)

hi
job done
took me 2 days .. first was difficult and second (once I knew what I was doing was much easier)
just few things to point out

1. with fabtech 6 inch lift just pop out the upper ball joint mount from the spindle and you will be able to maneuver your way out with the CV axle

2. to get the CV axle from the diff slide hammer did not work for me but old good pry bar got the job done in no time ... if it does not want to pop put just keep rotating it a bit and re-try... once the "C-ring" is positioned the opening down it pops out very easily (difficulty is C-ring is inside and no way to see how it is positioned so trial and error approach suggested)

this is the pry bar I used
Amazon.com: SK Hand Tools 6612 Bent Tip Pry Bar 17": Home Improvement

cheers

Re: Replacing a broken CV axle (pictures)

Something to add to the sticky for beginners (like me because I need to know before starting)

when using the toyota cv boot kit, where does the dark colored grease go? and for extra clarity, where does the light colored grease go?

Re: Replacing a broken CV axle (pictures)

Jon, Thanks for the excellent write-up!!! I, like many other folks have printed it out and will carry it with me!

As most of you know, the 2003 through Present 4Runner axle shafts fit the FJ. Armed with this info I did some shopping around.

I found some replacement axle shafts for much less than Toyota folks want. O'Reilly's carrys an after market axleshaft that they sell new for $69.95 with no exchange. I may not leave this axle shaft in my FJ, but it would be a good field replacement until I return home. Autozone has rebuilt 4Runner axleshafts for $59.95 exchange. This to me is a good option!

cheers,

dale

Thumbs up Re: Replacing a broken CV axle (pictures)

Jon, yo this is an awesome DYI write up. Thank you sir! I'm going to print it out and add it to my kit. Seeing it inspires me to replace my front driver diff seal instead of taking it in and having the dealer deny me warranty service again. It's time I learn to do this. All I need is the slide hammer and I'm ready to give it a go.

Since I'm there I might as well take the spindles off too and get the All Pro Gussets welded up.

Great write up man.
