Re: Keep stock 16" TRD S.E wheels with 6 inch lift

There is a simple answer, no. The factory wheels do not have the backspacing that is needed for a 6" lift.

My TRD wheels are the one thing I miss, since having the Rough Country 6" installed.

I'd say a 3". Most anyone who does serious wheeling will say 3" is the maximum. Unless your TennesseeSquire (he just wheels that good). A 3" is that extra boost in clearance, without hurting your suspension geometry, and raising your center of gravity.

Unless you are damn a good driver, 6" is just to much if plan on wheeling. You do get a bonus in clearance.. but at the same time you don't. Your cross member is still in the exact same spot as it would be with 6" lift. Also you'll have the super high center of gravity, excess stress on all front suspension parts, and driveline (if you go with 35"s).
Thanks Dom

That is one of the reasons I don't run 35's, I currently on 305x65-17's BFG KM2's .

After negleting my Cruiser and working on my other money pits for awhile; I am back on the FJ. So I have some Questions.

I'm at a loss between the Icon 3" Coilovers and the Fabtech 6"...

People that did 3" kits, are you getting enough ground clearance? Or should I do a 6" ? ....My biggest problem has been clearance.

Can I keep my stock 16" TRD wheels with a 6 inch lift?
I started with the OME 3" it was Just O.K. I wanted clearance, I went to the Fab-Tec 6" so I could put bigger wheels on the rims and lift the axles higher. The kit has a arched front cross member and small skid to protect the pumkin from damage without loosing any ground clearance. My rims are 12.8" wide and I can put some serious rubber If I like, throw in some spacers and I just added 8' overall width to the stance which in turn counters the High center of gravity!! Check out some of the Ultimate Four Wheeling videos. Every one runs 35"s are bigger with high lifts 6,8,10". You can not get any more clearance with your stock truck unless you put larger tires on and that can only be done with a Lift!!!

TS can you explain why the wheels don't work with your 6 inch lift? A different configuration of the steering knuckle?
Thanks.

Yes, The RC kit comes with new knuckles that are almost double the size of the stock ones.

I don't know about the Fabtech's or Pro-Comp's kits.

Re: Keep stock 16" TRD S.E wheels with 6 inch lift

Here is mine with the TRD wheels with 35's and the Icon 3in lift. They clear just fine with a body mount chop and a little bit bigger bump stop in the front. The rear rubs a little on one side on the plastic but could be fixed with some trimming.

I get all the ground clearence with all the performance of the suspension.

Pro Comp's 6" requires an up-step to 18 inch wheels... or at least that's what the guys at 4WheelParts told me. I have OME and wouldn't change it for the world... OK... so maybe the Icons would be a little sweeter... or the Fox 2.5... OK, for my budget, OME is the BEST!

Re: Keep stock 16" TRD S.E wheels with 6 inch lift

I am going to go with a 3" but I am undecided on wheel/tire size. I was leaning towards 17's with 33's but these 16's and 35's look good. Did you have to do any regearing, and how is the pickup on the freeway merge?
I know you can't have it both ways but being able to merge safely without lag in acceleration is important to me as mine is a daily driver. Feedback is appreciated.
