Re: Suspension Mods - noises?

Yup. Sway bar being rubbed ever so slightly by my coilovers. Might quiet down if I file the point jutting out and making contact.

As for the rear shocks, they need ALOT of lube to stay quiet for say, a day or two.

Yes, it sucks but the ride and lift is so much better.

Re: Suspension Mods - noises?

A liberal application of the silty, slick mud we see in South Louisiana is a great silencer for all squeaks. The only squeak I encountered was on sway bar meeting coilover springs. Grind the sway bar per Mark Hawley's instructions and that squeak is GONE! Mud takes care of the rest.

Turn the stereo up and keep your eyes on the spotter. Noise happens! It's "snapping" breaking metal noise you should be concerned with!

Re: Suspension Mods - noises?

When I added my custom trailing link skids all was good, until - about a week later or so I noticed some strange noises from the rear suspension. It seemed to only happen in certain instances, but nevertheless associated with the rear suspension mod. I say rear suspension mod because I had replaced the factory "rear lower control arm / front mount nuts & bolts with new ones." I did this to obtain the extra length in the bolts I needed for my install. Well, the nuts started backing off and I got some rotational noise in the hardware and skid assembly (creaking and groaning a bit).

All is good now, but the lesson here is to check and re-check your hardware after new installs and make sure all stays tight and in place. This is where most if not all of our "suspension mod noises" come from - at least for me.

Re: Suspension Mods - noises?

Synthetic grease tends to be stickier & less prone to wash out, I personally use waterproof Green Grease & love the stuff.

For spray lube I prefer PB Blaster

- light years ahead of WD40 and also best solution for rusted nuts/bolts IMO.

For those having problems with the sway bar rubbing the coils, chances are your sway bar collars have loosened and the sway bar is shifting side to side, mine did along with many people on this board. The stock crimp on ring loosens (& sometimes falls off completely from what we've been told by customers) so we have a very inexpensive solution, remove or slide over he stock rings and bolt on these:

All Pro Off Road Sway Bar Collars; Only $19 each & its an easy permanent solution. Also helps your sway bar end links last longer by not allowing them to bind up when shifted over to one side when suspension is flexing off road

Re: Suspension Mods - noises?

My rear end was making a light sqeeking noise. After I removed the rear sway bar & links the noise stoped. The rubber bushings suck on these Fj's.Sooner or later going to have to replace the front ones with better bushings.

Re: Suspension Mods - noises?

Give all your springs a good hittin with a rubber mallet from all different angles till they find there place. MOST of us are squeeking beacause our springs arent seated correctly. Lube and grease only works till the mud dries. For the rest of you idk.
