Re: FJ Alignment Specs

I am looking for some help with a continuing problem with right-hand pull. I posted the latest information in my original thread on this. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Update: I called Hunter (the guys that make the alignment machines) and they confirmed everything said on this thread about caster: for rear-wheel drive cars, shoot for the right caster being 0.5 higher than the left side and take anything between 0.3 and 0.7 (to compensate for road crown) -- just like the OP of this thread stated. Of course, both sides still have to be within spec when you do this. Too bad I couldn't get the dealer to listen to me.

One of the posts in this thread says the caster is not adjustable, but I found another thread that has some really excellent explanations of the way the FJ alignment works and adjusts. Look for the posts by user 'jasonrmorrow' in this thread.

Re: FJ Alignment Specs

Ok, I read every post in this thread, and I think this is what the collective wisdom says (biased towards Doug from ToyTec's comments)

Camber left 0.0 Camber right 0.0 (get as close to 0 as possible)

Caster left 2.8 Caster right 2.8 +/- .5
or 2.6L 3.0R to compensate for road crown
But will end up on the low range because of the lift

Toe left 0.04 Toe right 0.04.

(camber is adjustable to 0 , You cannot Adjust Caster without sacrificing either toe, or Camber, on a vehicle that is lifted with stock control arms.)

Toyota Spec
FRONT Specification (Neg. Tolerance Pos. Tolerance)
Left Camber 0.15° (0.50° 0.50°)
Right Camber 0.15° (0.50° 0.50°)

Left Caster 2.82° (0.50° 0.50°)
Right Caster 2.82° (0.50° 0.50°)

Total Toe 0.08° (0.17° 0.17°)

Left SAI 12.35° (0.50° 0.50°)
Right SAI 12.35° (0.50° 0.50°)

Based on my problems with right-hand pull, you do not want the caster 0.5 less than the left caster (-.5). You definitely want the right caster somewhere between 0.3 and 0.7 MORE than the left, whatever the actual numbers. If you get 2.6L and 3.0R as per your second option above, that should work.

Unhappy Re: FJ Alignment Specs

Dammit....I'm still floating down the road.

I got the RC3" lift with 285 Cooper STTs and took it to the dealer to get it aligned. They used the Hunter machine.

Starting:

Left Camber .74
Left Caster 1.04
Toe .03

Right Camber .74
Right Caster .87
Toe. 16

Finish:

Left Camber .44
Left Caster 2.35
Toe .04

Right Camber .72
Right Caster 2.01
Toe .03

From the posts I read it sounds like the thing they want to try to get close to zero is the camber. There is almost no change in that.

Several folks on this post give specs that work for them, but where can I get the specs for my setup? What is really important here?

Does anyone know of a decent shop in Northern Virginia / DC area?

I'm gonna name my FJ the SS Minow soon cause I'm floating all over the place.

Here's my before and after:

After lifting but before the new tires and alignment, it felt fine.
After new tires, it was 'floaty' on the freeway.
After alignment, it was back to fine.

For Camber, that is all the could get with the lift...

--Bill
would have been nice of them to more closely match your front camber readings and see why your caster is low on both sides...would be nice to have 2.5 pos or greater. theres Specialty Products brandadjustable UCA's available now to correct these issues
