Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

This looks like an amzingly well thought out product. Good job.

I searched the thread and wanted to make sure I asked this because I cannot find the answer.....

Will this fit the 08 models with a ton of airbags like mine? I ask because seeing where people ran wires, I don't want to pull off a panel or disturb an airbag when doing this. Mine has airbags in the headliner and the front pillars, seats, and dash. Obviously the dash and seats won't be affected, but do the wires run through the pillars in front?

Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

The airbags are not actually behind the A Pillar

Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

So where are they? The label is on the pillar, I thought that was where they are.

Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

The symbol is there but I believe they are in the headliner. In fact the wiring connection for the stock roof lights is behind the A Pillar.

Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

Weird indeed. I thought federal requirements said they had to be labeled where the bags actually are.

I know the ones in the rear seat headliner are labeled with little plastic dots.

I just didn't want to pull off a panel piece and get the airbag messed up and wind up paying the dealership a small fortune to fix something I yanked off.

Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

The original map light kit is so nice and easy to install that I wouldn't go with anything else especially since I hooked my scanguage up to it. Looks great and is one of my favorite mods.

1st and most important .. and I state the following in my install guides ...

Warning: I recommend that you disconnect the negative (black) cable of the battery prior to starting any electrical installation project and you should wait at least 90 seconds before starting the project to allow for all vehicle safety systems to disarm.

The above will protect you from accidently setting off any air bags.

Ok, basically you should have a side curtain air bag, an airbag in the steering wheel and an airbag in your seat. I believe the one you may be concerned with is the side curtain air bag. The following picture shows you what you would see if the driver's side a-pillar cover is removed and how I have you route the power wire for the map light to stay away from the side curtain air bag.

I have had '08 people install the kit. You should be just fine and thank you for the compliment.

Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

Hey SwissArmy, couldn't you get rid of the dual switches, and just use a single switch for the manual use. Then have the lights always triggered by the doors? If you tied in the door ground to the common ground, and used a diode to prevent the +12v from hitting the ground when the doors were closed you'd be able to get rid of the switch right? I know just enough to be dangerous, but was trying to figure this out for myself.

You could tap into the door and overhead light circuits and basically do as you suggest. It would be quite a bit more involved and I did not want to go that direction. Drop me an e-mail if you would like an electrical diagram.

Re: Overhead Maplight Kit

I found a switch that I am going to try and use with the Door 12v.

SPDT Center Off Rocker

My map light houses my ScanGuage, so I am not worried about it intruding on the space.
