Any nice places to Wheel AND Camp near Houston...

or within a few hours drive (like 1 1/2 to 2 hours)? I'd like to go this upcoming weekend. I was thinking Sam Houston National Forrest or maybe somewhere along the coast (Galveston, Surfside, etc...)?

Re: Any nice places to Wheel AND Camp near Houston...

It's not a 2 hour drive (3-4 hours) but I went down to North Padre Island (Corpus Christi) this week and got in about 40 miles of sandy 4 wheeling fun. It was easy since they had a bunch of rain from the cold front on Thursday and the sand was packed. We did not camp on the beach this time but we usually do. This time of year the wind/weather can cause problems for beach campers but it’s a nice trip if the weather cooperates and the fishing is good.

I was at Sam Houston NF a few weeks ago. There are a few trails out there that got kind of fun, but nothing too serious. Camping there was pretty nice. That being said, I didn't visit the eastern half of the Forest, I stayed mainly around Lake Conroe.
